I don't know how much people like it but I almost always get a chip and dip set from crate and barrel and the dip recipe book that they sell as well. Last time I threw in a couple of dip mix packets that they had near the recipe books. It usually goes over well.

I usually give a GC to home depot, Lowes or Bed Bath and Beyond. I have also given the crate and barrel chip/dip set too but the GC always gets rave reviews.

if you want an actual gift, we gt a basket with bread, wine, salt and something else-theres a poem that goes with it too (its mentioned in its a wonderful life)
other than that, home depot gcs were great

We received a basket filled with "traditional" house warming gifts and a saying that went with it:
''A Traditional Housewarming: Bread - So you never go hungry. Wine - So your life is always sweet. Salt - So there is always spice in your life. And a Candle - So you always have light.''
If I remember correctly (I don't have a copy of the saying we received right with me now), there was also rice and something about fertility.
I had never heard of this tradition and thought it was sucha sweet gift to receive. I loved it!

some of my favorites that we got were:
gift cards to BBB or home depot
serving dishes
wine rack
deep fryer
honestly gift cards were the best...and I always thought of the person buying me that particular item we got with it

I would do a gift card to:
-home depot
-lowe's
-target
-home goods
There are always so many things you need when you first move in that you don't anticipate.
If the couple was recently married, you could see if anything was left on their registry - otherwise, it's hard to know what they might want/need.
Personally, I would like a bottle of wine, but if given a choice between a $50 bottle of wine or gift card, I'd rather have the gift card.

Favorite housewarming gift
The best gift we got was a set of personalized mugs with our street name turned into an "inn" and the back saying "established 2012" and the city we live in. This was very special because we have a built in mug rack and no fun mugs! A good friend made these for us and now they're proudly displayed!
The second best gift I've received was from my SIL. She made us sauce and got some really good bread, pasta, olive oil and salt to put in a bag. We had pasta the next night!
Gift cards are always good though!!!
