Binky Screamer

DD is 3 mo and is not yet sleeping thru the night. We put her down with a binky and shes out for about 4-5 hours. Sometimes she will wake up not hungry but wanting a binky reset I call it.
She usually sucks it back in if its next to her head.
I feel like we are creating a nightmare if we continue to go and replace the binky each time but she starts to cry if its not in her immediate area.

Anyone have any ideas how to get her to self soothe now before she gets older or is this ok and not habit forming?

TIA!

*** I don't want to take it away but have her learn to self soothe.
How do i do that?

Re: Binky Screamer

DD loved her binky when she was an itty bitt. At 18 mos we took it away cold turkey - and honestly it wasn't a big deal at all.

Did she scream for it in the night?

Re: Binky Screamer

it's a tough one and people will tell you different things. it really does depend on the child, imo. We always replaced her binky when she was in the rock n play in our room. it wouldn't wake her up if it fell out, but if she woke/startled and it wasn't there, she wouldn't go back to sleep. as she got older and went in her crib, she learned how to find it in the dark (funny to watch on the video monitor) and stick it back in (even funnier when she sticks the pacifier in and she already has one in there). somewhere along the way she learned to self soothe... so no i don't think you're creating a monster, but again every kid is different. now the problem is that she throws them out of the crib so we put like 5,000 in there at a time.

Re: Binky Screamer

I would try to eliminate it asap! Picture your future: Where is the binky? Oh we have to go to the store, who has the binky? Do I have enough binkies? Is the binky clean? Ok, now I have to post on LI families how do I get rid of the binky.... etc.

In my opinion, the quicker you teach them to self soothe without a binky, the easier it is.

Fortunately I was very lucky, none of my kids really liked the binky (or maybe i am just a mean mom who deprived them of something they needed).

At around 4 months, DD figured out how to grab it herself and put it in. Made life so much easier. Just my opinion, but I think 3 months is too young to be worrying about setting up lifetime habits. The baby and you are both adjusting to a brand new life, go with what works!!

I'm actually having the opposite problem. I wish ds would take a binky. He is just about six months old and stopped using a binky at around one month. I ebf and he uses me as his soother to get to sleep. I need this to stop ASAP. Ds one did this and couldn't fall asleep without nursing until he was 21 months old. It was a nightmare with a newborn. I'm trying to get him to take the binky to soothe him to sleep but he won't.

True. I guess that I will have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully she learns to pick it up soon. Chat Icon

Thanks
