Re: MIL question....with poll

IT would def. annoy me - even though it is coming from a good place. I personally won't leave my little ones overnight yet - I am just not ready for it. I have done it 2 times with my parents, but my IL are divorced and I just don't trust them with my 2 toddlers.

Re: MIL question....with poll

I wouldn't be mad.

I'd say something along the lines of, "Thanks for offering, we're okay right now, but if we ever need to take you up on your offer I'll let you know!"

I think she's probably trying to be nice. Maybe when she had her kids she never got help and always swore that she would help when she was a Grandma, ya know? I wouldn't shut the idea down entirely...because maybe one day her offer will sound really appealing!

MIL question....with poll

I would be annoyed especially since she keeps bringing it up to your DH. I would expect my DH to say something to his mother and tell her to stop bringing it up bc it is not happening.

Re: MIL question....with poll

my MIL never offers to take my son/sons overnight so i'd jump at the chance. Chat Icon

Honestly i know how easily MIL's can get on your nerves as a new mom. If i only told you stories of my MIL... Chat Icon.

But the one thing i've learned over the past 4 1/2 years and since having #2... you have to let a lot go. They usually mean no harm, they think they're trying to help and learn to speak your mind. Don't harp on your DH for the things his parents do either. Chat Icon Trust me... i've BTDT and then some.

It sounds like she means no harm. She loves the little guy to pieces and i think it's awesome that she offers to take him overnight. Don't offend her. Just politely say no thanks and maybe down the road you'll take her up on that. If you squash that idea now... she might not offer later and TRUST ME... you'll want her to take him every once in a while down the road. Chat Icon

Re: MIL question....with poll

Nice is saying it once. It's going overboard to mention it every time you see her, or more then once a week.

My mil tried that too. My girls have ever stayed there. There's just no reason for it. My mil tried it once, but my oldest didn't want to stay.

So yes, it would bug me.

i think she is being nice...she probably thinks you are hinting that you are tired and needing help.

I agree with this.

agree...my parents ask me all the time even though they know I will say no because I will miss them. They are just being nice and want to make sure if I ever need a break I know they are there. Chat Icon

I agree with this. If I were you and didn't want my child staying over at MIL's house overnight I would stop bringing up the fact that the baby isn't sleeping well and that you are tired.

Totally agree.

Sounds like she just wants you to get a good night's sleep and if she's okay dealing with a child that doesn't sleep through the night, let her deal.

I love when the kids sleep over my parents. I'm actually counting down the days to a Friday night wedding we have in October Chat Icon

IMO she isn't being nice for your sake, she is pretending she is asking for you but she really wants this for herself. For me it would be a firm no that I would NOT change my mind on to accomdate her or appease her. I am not a fan of grandparents who want to play parent again, sorry if t his sounds harsh. And i just read about your monthly sleep over. She is absolutely trying to overstep her boundaries to keep asking about him staying over when you ALREADY let her watch him during the week AND sleep over once a mth!

You are a saint. I would NEVER go for that. I don't personally feel the need to give grandparents whatever they want. They had their kids and now this is our kid. Some grandparents can easily overstep boundaries when it comes to taking care of grandchildren and that to me can absolutely be a negative effect and snowball into much worse (such as her trying to overrule you). And the monthly sleep over thing just says to me that they want much more than I would ever be willing to give.

Yup, it's all about her. Trust me, it's not to give you a break because you are tired. You have a husband who can take over if you are tired. You are not imagining things. She asked you twice to munipulate you.
