transferring utilities when moving ?

we FINALLY have a closing date set and our attorney said we should begin calling the utilities companies to switch those over to our name so there's no disruption of service.

How do i do that? Do i just choose my own util companies (if there are options)? Which utils do i need?

Obviously LIPA is one of them ... but how does water & oil work? And am i missing any other ones?

TIA

LIPA/National Grid (gas if applicable) - call and give them the date you want your service turned on in your new home. Your accounts are linked, so you only need to call LIPA and they will set up NG if you have gas in the home.

Water - Same as LIPA/National Grid

Oil - You will most likely want get a service contract and lock into pricing. As long as there is enough oil in the tank, you don't really have to do anything before you move/close.

Cable - call, they will take care the of switch

You really don't have a choice for electric, gas or water (generally). Obviously you can choose cable and oil.

Good luck! Chat Icon

I just moved last weekend and actually called the Saturday I moved in. I had no disruption of service. I wouldnt wait until last minute though unless you have to, like I did. Go to the post office and change your address, change it at work, with your retirement system or whatever, all credit cards etc. Let everyone know. I also called water, oil, lipa, and cablevision. To figure out service. I did it all in an hour or so no problem. Good luck!
