In biting hell...help!
DD is 13 months and biting like crazy. At her 12 month appointment the ped said to do time outs. They helped for a bit but not anymore. She has bit multiple kids at school, bites me and DH and is now biting herself when she gets upset. It's clearly out of frustration. Any suggestions? I'm desperate. Everyone keeps saying it's normal and she'll outgrow it, but it's been about 2 months.

Re: In biting hell...help!
I didn't deal with biting, but my DS was a face scratcher. He scratched many of my friends kids and kids at his gym class. When he was around other kids I would hawk him! I was on top of everything he did. The second his hand came up, I pulled him out of the situation and into time out. I bribed him with lollipops, stickers, etc... I would prep him in the car before play dates that if he was able to keep his hands to himself I would give him XYZ. Eventually it stopped, but it did take time, probably lasted 6-8 weeks.

Re: In biting hell...help!
We had a biter. It was definitely a phase and I think it also tied into his teething. We asked him to "use his words" a lot and read him books about not biting during times when he was calm so that he could really hear and understand the message. We taught him that when he gets upset, he takes a deep breath and then counts to 5 to calm himself down. When he did bite or hit, we were consistent with time outs. He sits on the last step and the timer is set for a minute. I leave the room so that he can't cry or plead to me. When the timer goes off, he apologizes for what he did. With consistency, this system worked. I think it also helped that he got all of his molars. It really stopped once that happened. Good luck! It is not easy to deal with as a parent. Just know that it's not your fault so don't blame yourself.

In biting hell...help!
Thanks for the responses. DD is only 13.5 months so as much as we talk to her about not biting, I don't think she gets it. For example, this morning when I dropped her off at school before I took her out of the car I told her she needed to be a good girl and she was not to bite. As soon as she heard me say bite she bit her hand. I guess at least she understands what biting is. We're being very consistent with pulling her arm down and saying "no biting", which does seem to be helping a little bit. I asked the school to do the same so she has the consistency. Oy I hope this phase ends soon!
