My husky, who will be 14 next month, had been peeing a lot and having accidents. I brought her to the vet and they did an X-ray. It showed some questionable spots so I took her for an ultra sound today. She has a mass in her uterus. The vet wants to spay her next week. We had never done it in the past because we thought we may breed her, which we never did. The vet thinks that in removing her uterus and ovaries, we will eliminate the peeing problem, because the mass is putting pressure on her bladder. The surgery will cost $2500-3000 and we just spent $900 in the last two days. For me, it's a no-brainer- she is having surgery. My DH wants me to consider putting her down thinking how much more time does she have anyway. I just can't do it. Am I being a good dog mom, or am I being frivolous spending all this money on a 14 year old dog?
Update- I called a friend who owns an animal rescue foundation and she put me in touch with the surgeon they use. He's only going to charge me $1500 for the procedure. The only downside is he's in Queens and we live in White Plains, but no biggie.

thats a lot of money to spay her, can you do it somewhere else? I dont think you're being frivolous if you feel she is apart of your family. If you can, do you think you can get a second opinion?
I spent over 20k (i know its a lot) saving my beloved buddy. he had everything under the sun. Parvo (when he was a puppy), allergies, cysts on his feet, seizures and I thought every penny I spent was well worth it. Unfortunately we had to put him down he when he was 6.

I don't think that is in any way, shape or form frivolous. You're saving her life. I don't believe in giving up on an animal just because he or she is old and might not have a lot of time left.
Yes...it's rare, but I've known people who had dogs who lived for nearly 20 years.

The reason it's so expensive is because they feel it's best to bring in a surgeon, rather then the regular vets who spay everyday.

I think if your dog is in otherwise good health and can withstand the anesthesia, then I do not think it is frivolous at all. Hope your "puppy" has a speedy recovery

I'd have to spend the money. I don't know that I could live with the idea of "what if" she had another good few years ahead of her and I took that away because I wouldn't spend the money. But I know my DH would say the same thing yours is.
I might go get a second opinion, just because I didn't think they generally recommended having dogs spayed after a certain age (or maybe that was just pits?) and I'd be concerned about that. And like a pp mentioned, if they dog would be able to handle the anesthesia. Good luck!!!

My response before your update would have been spending the money wouldn't have been frivolous, and if I had the money to do it, while my DH would have the same feeling as yours, I'd lean towards doing the surgery.
After update...
 $1500 while still high, a much better! Hoping your baby has a speedy recovery!

my dogs are my family, children of mine without question and i'd spend whatever i had to on them. luckily, i think dh and i think alike when it comes to this.
for a speedy recovery for your baby!

my mom's westie had a similar problem at age 10. she was spayed, never had urinary issues again and just passed away at 19...
