Anyone expand a ranch
Found a house dh loves. I love the inground pool and huge backyard. We know interior wise we can blow out a wall to make it bigger but I was thinking at a later date putting a second floor extension with a master bdrm, bathroom and walk in closet but don't know if it's doable with a ranch.

Re: Anyone expand a ranch
ranches are so easy to expand! you can put a second floor on with so many different configurations. ranches also usually have nice big basements! i never thought i'd like a ranch and we bought one 7 years ago. i love it!

Re: Anyone expand a ranch
I grew up in an L-shaped ranch with no basement that my parents expanded into a u shape.
We own a ranch with a full basement that was expanded by the previous owners. It was a living dining combo with a narrow kitchen, a hall bath, master bedroom with tiny master bathroom and two additional bedrooms. The second floor addition added a large master, master bathroom, additional bedroom (would be a perfect nursery) we use it as our home gym and a loft area that is my office. So it's a 5 bedroom, 3 full bath home now. We took down walls to make the kitchen more open and we modified the layout upstairs to make a large master bath and walk in closet.

We have a ranch that was expanded before we bought it...i love it! There are few things I woukd have done a little different when expanding but overall its great! We have 3 bedrooms on the main floor and the.a master suite with a bathroom upstairs. They expanded in only half the house so we still have vaulted ceilings in our living room which is what I love most about our house. There were a lot of our same ranch style in our neighborhood and lots of variations of how they were expanded...some like ours, some more like a cape, and some fully expanded/dormered upstairs to make it a colonial. Imo you can't go wrong with a ranch...so many options if you have the money to expand.

Re: Anyone expand a ranch
My parents just expanded theirs. Their house was destroyed with Hurricane Irene (live on the water) and used this time to expand the house I grew up in. They blew out the kitchen 3x original size. It was an easy job, minus Building Dept permits, that took a long time, but was totally doable and easy once job was contracted out. Go for it.
