Coxsackie and Daycare
DS was diagnosed with coxsackie. He doesn't have a fever and no open sores - just sores in his mouth and on his legs. The doctor felt he could go to daycare because that's where he picked it up, so they've all been exposed anyway. I'm keeping him home today but should I send him tomorrow? I don't want to get anyone sick - but he really is fine, playful, eating, etc. Maybe a wee bit cranky, but that's not unusual.

I don't know, I kept DS home for a week when he had it. He didn't have a fever but he just looked so yucky.

Re: Coxsackie and Daycare
DD had a fever over the weekend, I thought it was teething and sent her to daycare Monday. They called to tell me she started with the rash, but since she was fever free for over 24 hrs she was no longer contagious and could stay there.
I ended up picking her up anyway, b/c they said she was laying on the floor and didn't want to play, so I figured she was just uncomfortable still.

Coxsackie and Daycare
Coxsackie just ran through DDs daycare. They sent a letter home that if your child got it, it had to be diagnosed by the doctor and your child couldn't return to school until the sores were completely gone. I wouldn't want my kid to continue to be exposed to it, so no, I'd keep your DS home a little longer. It's inconvenient, but you don't want to infect the other kids.

I'd follow your daycare's policy. While I'm sure some of the kids were exposed, it doesn't mean all of them are.
If this is a WWYD question, I'd keep him home. He's still contagious & with his body fighting off cox sackie, I think he's more suceptible to a secondary infection.
Per the NIH website:
When and how long can someone spread the disease?
A person is contagious when the first symptoms appear and may continue until the blister-like skin lesions disappear. The virus has been known to be shed in the stool for up to several weeks

Coxsackie and Daycare
I wouldn't send him to daycare. Coxsackie is very contagiuos and can pass through saliva, stool. 1 child at my twins' daycare got the coxsackie Virus and within 3 days every single kid in the daycare had it. This was a few weeks ago. I woudl definitely keep him home probably for the rest of the week.

Re: Coxsackie and Daycare
Thank you for the opinions! Daycare says I can send him back - I'll see how he is tonight. It's run through the daycare at this point - we had received an alert about it last week. These things are so hard - my back up childcare is away, so that would have been an easy solution... I don't want to infect others!

Re: Coxsackie and Daycare
My DD just had it. She is done with school and does not go to daycare, but I didn't even send her to gym class b/c I didnt want to expose anyone. So she was basically home for a few days even after the fever was gone.

I kept my son out, but he only goes p/t. His whole class wound up getting it and they were all out by the end of the week.

Find a new doctor immediately.

Re: Coxsackie and Daycare
I sort of agree with the doctor - he goes to the daycare 2 days a week and caught it from there (several other children have it). If he was exposed, there's no way the other children were not. I'm certainly not a doctor or have any experience in germ exposure - so I hear what you're all saying.
I would prefer all of the other day care parents to be super conservative about sending their children back because I feel like we don't go a week without illness, it's so frustrating!

So two wrongs make it right?
The THIRD time my daughter got coxsackie at daycare, I learned one child was brought into school knowing they had it but the parents couldn't take off from work.
Which led me to taking three days off from work during my busiest time of the month.
I keep my child home with every illness based on the rules of daycare (since I get completely pissed off when other parents don't) and based on how long my doctor tells me she will be contagious.

The doctor and the daycare say he can return - I was just curious what other parents would do. If I didn't care at all, I would have sent him without a moments hesitation. Again, thank you for the feedback.

I don't want to start a whole debate but as a fellow daycare mom I just want to say that I totally agree with you! I work and DH and I are always takign days off (or begging grandparents to take off) to watch my DS whenever he gets sick and we generally keep him out for hte rest of the week because we don't want to infect the other kids. I don't think all parents do the same and I really wish they would because not only does my DS get sick but then my DH and I get sick too -- a vicious cycle!
