Getting quotes for CAC - and getting frustrated!
This is mainly a vent, but practical advice is more than welcome.
We've had three companies give us estimates. So far this is what we got back:
1. Sears - We were happy with the quote and presentation and about to go with them but they have 17,000 complaints over the past 3 years and that gives us major pause.
2. Company #2 - keeping them nameless for now. Got them from here. They are still in the running but the guy was weird. It seemed like he wanted to sell us a heat pump more than central air. They were a little more expensive than I would have liked.
3. Air Now - Got their name from here as well. They came and did an estimate eight days ago and were supposed to email it to us the next morning. I really liked the guy, too, and liked a lot of what he said so I was looking forward to their estimate. Well I've called three times, confirmed my email address with them, checked my spam, etc.... and I still have NOT heard back. This annoys me so much. If I have to chase them down now when they don't have my business yet, what is it going to be like when they do?
4. Apple Air- Called twice and finally spoke to someone a few minutes ago who said they would call me on Monday to schedule the estimate. Um, really? We can't schedule it now? No one is there with a calendar?
5. Petro - coming next Friday.
I am getting frustrated because it's a major purchase and I feel like something is wrong with everyone. I can't put my finger on it with #2, though. I guess I should get past the guy being weird, right? I mean, he's not moving in.
Any thoughts on any of these companies or thoughts on anyone else I should call?
Did anyone use Sears?
Are there any companies who actually want my business and present themselves well and don't have a million complaints against them?
Help!

Re: Getting quotes for CAC - and getting frustrated!
Jenn - I'd get the estimate from Apple Air. I've heard consistently good things about them. We have central air and my husband was thinking of switching over to them for service because they get such good reviews.
Maybe they just had someone less than stellar answering the phone, or it was a new person or something... not to say that's the best way to present your company to consumers, of course, but I'd still give them a chance.
We use Slomin's to service our CAC, but that's who the previous owners used and we just kept on using them when we bought the house. I think they're fine, for what we use them for. But I don't have any experience with installation (or how competitive they are on price for that).

I used Slomins but that is becuase my DH works for them but I must say I was very happy with the installation. I expected to come home and find my house messy and dust everywhere and it was actually very clean. They cleaned it all up etc...

We used this company and he gave us an excellent price but they work slow and he has a small, small company. http://airfresco.com/
We also got quotes from these 2 companies who were a little more but we really like them but went with the first.

I would never use Sears for CAC. I believe they oursource for most of their jobs and so you just cant rely on what kind of a job it would be.

Re: Getting quotes for CAC - and getting frustrated!
my feedback:
1) yes, that seems like a lot of complaints for Sears, but I can only imagine how many jobs they actually do. They may outsource their work, but a good thing is that they all have to answer to corporate, so if you ever had a problem, you could work your way up the chain until a problem was resolved.
2) try NOT to get a heat pump. They are not very efficient in the winter. Ask around about that.

Re: Getting quotes for CAC - and getting frustrated!
I had Apple air do mine and was happy.
Basically the owner does all estimates the have a few people handling the phones assuming that the person you dealt with didn't have his schedule. I wouldn't give up on them just for that

We used them 7 years ago and have not one single complaint. Yes, they outsource out, but they showed up on time, worked all day, explained every step of the process, were efficient and spent an hour cleaning up when they were done. They gave us a detailed quote, the guy from Sears came to us at 9 pm at night because that's when DH gets home from work. He didn't rush us at all, told us about all the rebates, got all the permits from the TOB, etc. He mapped out two different scenarios for us (we have central heat and said it was no issues to use the same ducts; or we could upgrade and have separate ducts put in for the CAC).
He called us the day after to find out how everything went.
I do recommend them, but for any job, do your HW and be comfortable with who you use. Good Luck!

What kind of quotes are you getting if you don't mind me asking? You can FM if preferred. I want to look into CAC for next year.
