Where did your buyer come from?
When you sold your house (or even reverse it to when you bought yours), how far away did they come from?
Point being, our home is for sale and it seems to be advertised in "local" publications, being maybe a 20 mile radius from home. I am thinking I want my agent to advertise further outside that range.
Thoughts?

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
We were selling in Lake Ronkonkoma and our buyers came from Queens. BUT her family was in Ronkonkoma, so they had her parents helping them look.
I don't see anything wrong with advertising further away.
Good Luck

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
i would say you would want it more than 20 miles away. advertising a long island house to places in california doesn't necessarily make sense, but certainly you want it publcized in nyc, and maybe even westchester and jersey.

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
When I sold my place in Babylon, the buyer came from Wantagh. I then moved in with my now DH, who lived in Commack. We knew when we bought our house together, we would be staying in Commack because his son is in school there. Our new house is 3 blocks from where we were previously.

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
We moved from Brentwood to Smithtown. Our buyer ( when we sold our condo) came from PA but her daughter lived in our complex and she wanted to be in the complex as well.

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
As a real estate agent, my experience is that print advertising doesn't really work to attract buyers... it may serve as good publicity for the individual listing agent or listing company, but it rarely draws a buyer. Sometimes, when one of my sellers has been really insistent, I've placed advertisements in local newspapers (and not so local newspapers, such as The Village Voice). And I've never had a sale of the property I advertised result from those ads.
Research has repeatedly shown that the most effective advertising is internet advertising (and that's been the case with my personal experience, too)... at my company, we put our listings on up to 500 websites, which includes the local MLS, as well as national sites (Zillow, Trulia, Realtor.com, Frontdoor.com, etc.) and the online versions of local publications in all 50 states.
If someone is looking to move from Nassau to Suffolk, or even from California to Long Island, I am sure that they are either (i) looking online themselves, and/or (ii) working with a real estate agent that services the particular area they are looking to move to and has access to all of the listings.
So as a seller, I wouldn't really stress about advertising in local print media beyond your immediate area if you have a strong internet presence (i.e, at a minimum, are on the most popular national sites).
To answer the original question - Most of my customers who buy on Long Island are moving from a nearby town or making the transition from the city (Manhattan, Queens, or Brooklyn) to the suburbs.

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
It has been local for us.....
When we bought our house in Centereach we came from Kings Park. (2004)
When we sold the Centereach house the buyers were from Selden. (2010)
When we bought our house in SMithtown we came from Centereach. (2010)
When we sold my mom's house in Kings Park, the buyer was from East Northport. (2011)
But it can't hurt to advertise to more people. I know when we were looking in Smithtown, we were looking in a specific area and actively looked in the smithtown papers, etc. If people want a specific area they will seek the info.

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
Both the buy & sell of the condo, and the purchase of our home were local.
I would think as long as you are on the big websites, you are covered. We never looked at a print ad when we were house hunting, we always used MLSLI.

Re: Where did your buyer come from?
I think a lot of times if someone is looking to move into a certain area, they pick up that local paper and look for houses..... I wouldn't expect one paper on LI to have hourses all over the place. And with the internet, I don't know how much people look at papers for houses anymore.

I totally agree!
MLSLI, Zillow and trulia- that's where buyers come from
I think I sold 1 house from my livingchoice magazine ad...and if I paid for this ad myself- I wouldn't do it
I gladly pay for online marketing but the magazine ad is really for show and for other agents
what is the average days on market in your area? this is an important fact to know and easy for your agent to pull
it takes time to sell a house - some sell fast- it depends on the area- I know you are further out east- I would assume the average DOM is longer in that area
