Anyone Heard of a Vitality Scan?

I'm on the fence about using my OB...

I called the office to get an appointment today and was told that I need to come in for a vitality scan (ultrasound to determine that I'm actually pregnant) before I can schedule a first appointment with the OB. And I can't schedule both on the same day which means I'll have to take 2 half days off to visit the office! :P

Has anyone heard of this?

I'm abit PO'ed about this new policy considering it's not convenient visiting the office and I would need to take time off and get no pay from work. There are other reasons I'm PO'ed too but this one is bugging me now. :P

Sorry I never heard of this. All my OB did to confirm that I was pregnant was a urine test, followed by the standard blood tests.

Never heard of it. The first sono was part of my first appt, and so was bloodwork.

I had a blood test to confirm then had my first ob appt. Differenr days but about 2 weeks apart because your 1st ob appt is usually between 7-9 weeks so they can see something on sono. My sono was part of my first appt.

Re: Anyone Heard of a Vitality Scan?

Maybe you heard wrong - I've heard of a viability scan - where they check that there is a viable pregnancy. Not sure why your OB would require this before he/she sees you though. Normally a simple urine or blood test would suffice, then you'd get the viability scan around 6-8 weeks? Call and ask questions! Don't let yourself be confused!! Chat Icon

Hmm, strange, never heard of that.
After I got a positive test I called a new OB's office, they told me to come in that week , they said since I had a MC beofo that they wanted to see me asap. I was 5 weeks 2 days they did HCG qnd urine test and he did an ultrasound (he didn't see anything )
That was my first prenatal visit with my new OB .
With my previous pregnancy -the one when I had a MC- they did the same thing, this was with my regular OB, as soon as I got a positive test I called them and they told me to come in, I was barely 5 weeks. The dr did blood work to check HCG, urine test and an ultrasound.

Re: Anyone Heard of a Vitality Scan?

Thanks all.

I called again and the office told me I need to come in for 2 blood tests and 1 ultrasound before I can even see the doctor.

Apparently because I had a miscarriage earlier this year, they said I have a history of miscarriage and needed to do this.

I've asked if I can get the last blood test, ultrasound and exam in one visit so I'm only making 2 visits instead of 4 and they said no, that's how their policy is.

Very uncompromising, I guess they have enough patients knocking on their door and one less is not a big deal to them.

Re: Anyone Heard of a Vitality Scan?

If you're already unhappy with how the office works, I definitely wouldn't go with them... it probably won't get better as you need to go more often.

When I went in a week after my initial sono, they labeled it as a vitality scan because I was concerned from a viral infection I had that it was going to harm the baby so that's how they billed it. I was 7 w 4 d at my first OB appointment and the vitality scan was done at 8 w 5 d.

It's a little strange they're making you take off so much time from work, though. Do they have weekend or evening hours you can do some of the things? Why do you want to switch to this particular office so badly?

I like the idea of extra attention, but inflexibility is extremely frustrating. Hope everything goes well!

Thanks. I actually want to switch away from this inflexible office to another one. But this is the only one where I can book an appointment as a late as 5 or 5:30pm so I only need to miss 1 hour of work to get to the office.

The problem is, they are so busy because the office has the late hour which everyone wants to schedule and one good doctor (there are others).

Where do you live? The group I used to use in Garden City had evening appts. DH and I would meet there after work. I've been there as late as 7:30. I don't know if my new group in Islip has them, but since I'm a SAHM now, I haven't needed to ask.

eta: I used Garden City OBGYN, at 877 Stewart Avenue.

Re: Anyone Heard of a Vitality Scan?

My ob's office is actually the opposite, they want you to come in and see them first(they dont usually bill it as a maternity visit though) and once they confirm with urine then they schedule the sono for you.

Thanks, I'm in north NJ so Garden City would be abit of a trek.

Ideally, I would love to find a doctor who has an office in both north NJ and NYC or who has late hours in NJ.
