Re: cord blood

My doctor recommended Viacord, so that is who we went with. The normal cost is $2,250 but they are running a special this month and they took $500 off, so it will cost us $1,750, plus the yearly storage fee.

We are using Viacord. We used them with our first as well and were happy with them and that we did it.

We have been very happy with Viacord & will be banking with them again. My dh and I both have very poor family histories (in both our immediate & extended families) when it comes to blood cancers & disorders and CB is currently being used to treat some of the forms that we unfortunately see a lot of in our families. For us it was a simple decision because as frightening as it is, there's a very real chance that we may need to use it some day & we don't ever want to look back and realize that we missed our opportunity to bank Chat Icon

Re: cord blood

We will be doing it, I've heard great things about ViaCord....and our OB gave us pamphlets on different companies and I noticed ViaCord has a baby registry option! It even came with tear off cards you can put in with shower invites in case people want to donate $$ towards your fee. I thought that was pretty cool and I can see some of my co-workers doing that if they don't go to the shower.

This is great to know, thanks! Their rates are definitely tempting, and I like that they are fairly local as well.

Re: cord blood

If its not a hardship, I think its a good thing to do - kind of like insurance - you pray to Gd you'll never need it.

My OB said both viacord and cbr were good, and he would go with whichever was cheaper. At the time, that was viacord. I have to research to see which is better now.

It is expensive but I just felt it was something we had to do. Hopefully we will never have to use it. With all the dumb cr*p I "waste my money on," I couldn't justify not buying this.

We r using Americord.... Did the payment plan for a year for $199 a month. & that includes 20 years of storage fees. Overall it was the best deal & I was very happy with their customer service when I called.

Re: cord blood

I asked DH about this and for everyday I get mail I have something that is for Core blood. My question is that you are paying all this $$ and is it really worth it?

Just crashing, but we banked for both boys
As my OB said... we take a life ins on our home for fire, flood, car insurance, etc
Hoping to never use it. Why not our children.
We put money aside for both boys. Got a good deal with our 2nd
If we weren't able to afford it we would've donated it
If you can afford it then I say do it and pray to never have to use it.
We plan on paying till they're 18 and then they will have to pay (and we'll make sure)
It's only yearly after the first lump anyway

This is how we feel too. With our 1st we used dh's yearly vacation time buy-back check to pay for it (he gets 6w of vaca a year, so he always sells 2 weeks back for cash) and this year we're using part of our income tax refund. We got a $500 discount at Viacord & that helped a lot too. After the initial investment, the annual maintenance is nothing. I think it's $120 a year or something like that...

Re: cord blood

I'm not going to try to steer you in either direction but I will say, do your research and ask your doctor.
There are two great articles about it on parents.com as well as tons of news articles that explain a little more to you.

Also, ask your doctor.

Good luck!

Re: cord blood

I would like to donate, DH would like to privately bank.

If we do it privately, it will either be CBR or Viacord.

Re: cord blood

We banked DDs cord blood with CBR. I used Care Credit to pay for it, its like a credit line you can use to pay for healthcare related expenses. I think I got 6 months or so to pay it off, made it a bit easier than coming up with it all upfront.

Re: cord blood

We did the public donation for DD 4 years ago.

We decided to privately bank for DS through CBR - he's due in 2 weeks so I don't have any feedback on how it yet. I have friends who've used them happily though.
