If you moved from NYC to the burbs

Did your NYC income tax withdrawal from your paycheck decrease significantly? I heard that although property taxes are higher on LI and lower in NYC, if you don't live in NYC they don't take out NYC tax from your paycheck so it essentially evens out somewhat.

Does anyone have experience with this and know if this is true? TIA!

When you move to LI you don't have that tax come out of your check anymore.

For me NYC Local taxes were $40 so nothing significant. Make sure you go to HR to change your address so they can remove the Local Taxes through payroll.

I have a family member who did this & between him & his wife, they take home about 7K more per year in their paychecks by not having to pay nyc tax.
And because property taxes on their house on LI are only 3K more than they were on their house in the city, they end up saving several thousand a year due to not having to pay the nyc tax.
Sounds good to me.

Re: If you moved from NYC to the burbs

What was being withheld in NYC local tax just about covered the new expense of my LIRR monthly ticket.

This is a must! And make sure they know you don't live within the 5 boros!! At a previous job the person in HR had my address correct but still had this tax taken out. I caught it a few months later. Someone that I used to work with at another job moved from NJ into the city (and changed her address to the city address) and they never took the tax out. She had a lot of NYC tax to pay this year.

Does anyone know what effect it has if we move to Long Island, but keep our apartment in the city?

The house in LI would be the primary residence.

I heard as long as the LI house is the primary then you do not pay NYC tax, but someone else said "Good luck convincing the city that you are not staying at the apartment in the city"

Re: If you moved from NYC to the burbs

It was a large difference when you added up DHs local tax and my local tax, when we no longer had to pay that.

Ooohh thats a good question since if we do move, we won't be selling our apartment in the city.

Met an accountant over the weekend and briefly brought this up.

He said that its very tough convincing NYC that you're not staying there.
So you'll still have to pay NYC tax.

Which sucks.

I rented (not owned) in NYC and bought in LI but our property taxes on LI are about 2k more than we paid in city taxes.
