If you have wood stairs

Do you have anythingon the steps like a runner or the carpet stair treads?

You don't worry about slipping? That's my concern.

Of course I am, actually my DH just re-did all of our stairs. I just walk down them holding the railing or slowly.

Now, my mom has fallen down her stairs and actually broke her butt bone. Chat Icon She said she is more careful about not running down the stairs in socks now.

I think you can slip with carpet too, you really just have to make sure you're not running down the stairs either way.

Re: If you have wood stairs

We just had new wood stairs put in. They were very slippery, plus i'd be afraid for the kids to slip and fall as well. We had a runner made and installed.

Re: If you have wood stairs

We don't have anything on our wood stairs. I'm just careful when I walk down. And am especially careful with my DS when I carry him down or he walks down.

As for slipping, it's rare if you are careful. Only happened once, this week as a matter of fact. I have the flu and somehow slipped. I screamed but actually only slipped one step. I was lucky.

You can slip with carpet too. I did, at my parents house. I actually fell all the way down to the bottom of the steps a few years ago.

We just ripped up all of our carpets and refinished the floors and the steps. I typically wear hard soled slippers anyway, but I definitely feel safer with the traction of a carpet. Thanks for showing the pic. Looks beautiful!

We don't have anything on them. Growing up, I've slipped on my parents carpeted stairs plenty of time. I haven't given much thought to ours to be honest. I probably am way less likely to rush down them without carpeting. We also have just a spare bedroom upstairs so I don't go up and down all that often.

Nothing. Just had them re-done and re-finished and I feel like it'd be a sin to cover them up! (It's a high ranch, so the stairs I am talking about are the up and down flight when you walk in the front door). Plus, easier to keep clean in the high traffic area coming in from outside.

Nothing. I love the wood look & don't want to cover it. I don't find it too slippery, but maybe I'm just used to it now.

I don't have anything but need to get something. Even though I am careful I fell down pretty bad recently. I know it could have happened on regular stairs but I think it hurt much more because the carpet wasn't there to cushion or slow down my fall. I hurt my elbow pretty bad, thankfully I wasn't carrying a baby

We didn't for years, but we just installed a carpet runner and I really like it. I'm so glad we got it.

Re: If you have wood stairs

Another one with naked stairs! I have a 3 year old and he knows to take it slow and be careful. Our stairs are also on the steep side but so far no one has fallen down them.

Re: If you have wood stairs

We just put a runner down about a year ago. I've slipped more times on the runner than I EVER did on naked wood stairs. Chat Icon

We have 2 fights of wood stairs and although I like the look of a runner we never did since we found runners to be more likely to slip - fall, especially with little ones... Maybe when they are older we will add runners.

Re: If you have wood stairs

I just slipped last week on our fully carpeted stairs. (carpet will be ripped up soon, and replaced with hardwood & likely a runner).

We had hardwood with a runner in our last house. I liked the look and functionality.

You can slip on wood or carpet, but its a softer landing on the carpet.

Same here. We refinished them and they look gorgeous but between the kids, the huge dog and me carrying laundry baskets(colonial) up 2 flights with a turn the runner was the safest option. I do like how a runner looks though since I'm pretty traditional.

Nothing yet but, I am looking into getting something. I fell carrying DS a few weeks ago so it's been highly suggested by numerous parties that we get something - although I do like the natural wood look better.
