The diversity of RVC is not really within the town - it was within the high school (Southside) to which I was referring. It's RVC but also parts of Lakeview and S Hempstead that go to that high school.

You also have co-op kids, rental kids, million dollar home kids, average joe kids all in the same high school.

Your elementary school will only be as diverse as your surrounding blocks, of course.

ok thanks for clarifying

Do any of you think rockville center has the same ammenities in terms of restaurants, parks etc that bayside or whitestone have?. My husband works in williamsburg and I work in downtown brooklyn and manhattan.

Yes, very much so.

RVC is a great area, with diversity yes and so many bars, restaurants, shpping, etc. IMO much more than Bayside. Schools are great, great community and excelllent for travel to boros and NYC.

Thanks so much, good to know as we live in astoria now and have so much available to us within walking distance Anyone else have any imput?

I know exactly how you feel since DH and I vacillate between Queens and Nassau all the time. We are so used to everything being so close and open 24/7. RVC is going to be like most towns in Nassau/Suffolk, you're going to end up driving a lot more than you expect. Of course, there are exceptions and it depends on where your home is located. RVC has a lot of stores, parks etc but it's not like Astoria where there's a bodega on every corner.

Thanks lol, My husband cant wait to leave crowded astoria! but I will miss it. Its so nice to hear everyones opinions. I really appreciate them and will share it with my husband. The only thing is the commute might be a little better from Bayside which is a factor since we have a DD. Do you think the RVC school district is comparible to district 26?

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

I've spent most of my life living in RVC and it is a great town to raise a family. Lots of restaurants and nightlife, movie theater, Rec Center for activities, great community feel with parades and a tree lighting, etc.

I would say it is not the most diverse town in the world but as an interracial couple you would encounter no problems whatsoever here. Some elementary schools have more of a mix of races than others, as well as more socioeconomic diversity than others.

I really have no knowledge of how Bayside and RVC schools compare but RVC has an excellent reputation.

FM me if you have any questions.

I know both areas very well. I would say RVC hands down. School district is one of the best on LI (and nationally). Although you will be paying higher taxes (and village tax) it's a great place to raise a family. In addition to great schools and location RVC has a lot to offer.. awesome restaurants, shopping, close to LIRR.

I am very partial to bayside, we looked to buy a house there but it was too pricey at the time. Bayside district is one of the best in the city, and the LIRR commute from there is the best! If you could buy within walking distance of LIRR you would have a great commute. I don't know much about RVC but I always feel like I you are going to live that close to queens, you should buy in queens and save yourself a lot of tax money. I would thing the districts are comparable, until high school. Ideally your dc would go to Cardozo.

Bayside is very diverse. We are also a biracial family and would have loved to live there

I don't know anything about RVC HS but you wouldn't really want to send your kids to Bayside HS. Growing up, it never had a nice reputation and I recently met a guidance counselor from bayside HS at a shower & she said that she would not send her kids there. I went to Cardozo HS & I loved it. I learned a lot, teachers were great & I never felt unsafe. It's a top HS in queens.

I'd go RVC hands down but I'm burbs biased. I think it has EVERYTHING you'd want in a town.

Queens is too congested for me.

Southside is one of the best SDs in the country.

Good luck with your search!

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

Thanks everyone. It is such aninvolved process. If we did not have dd we would likely stay in astoria. To the poster who discussed bayside high school, thanks alot i never knew it had a bad rep. I guess if we decide on bayside we need to make sure we are zoned for cardozo. We are also considering pot wasington and would love to hear thoughts on PW vs bayside and RVC

As far as the schools go D26 is one of the best in the city, RVC is one of the best on LOng Island.
To get a real feel you have to come hang out, take rides, go to dinner etc.. Then you will get a better feel of things.

Bayside has fantastic elementary schools and a great mix of urban/suburban life.

That said, if you plan to be there through high school you should know that there is no longer any city zoning for high schools - it's all an application process. So, while your kid might get into and go right down the block to Cardozo or Bayside, their best friends could be all over the city. Basically, it loses the tight-knit community feel once your kids get older because everyone is very scattered. .

This is untrue. Bayside DOES have a zone depending on your address it will be Bayside, Cardozo, or Francis Lewis. All students can apply to other schools including specialized and private but in Bayside you DO have a guarenteed seat in one of the three schools (again it which one depends on your address). If you have specific questions about the process FM me as I am a guidance counselor at a MS in Bayside and do this for a living Chat Icon

I would choose Bayside bc i live in the area & prefer it, the commute is awesome if you work in NYC.

Actually Bayside has a higher graduation rate, as does Francis Lewis (though all three are comparable and have great programs), I am also a Guidance Counselor at a MS in Bayside. Bayside does have a bad rep but it is undeserving. I have sent hundreds of students there in the last 5 years and they are very happy.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

I graduated from Bayside HS and live next ro RVC. In your shoes, I would choose RVC. Bayside is diverse but the high school wasnt that great. I was in the Latin Honors program and was fortunate to have some great teachers and competitive classmates back then (the top 5% of my class were all accepted to Ivy League colleges and I was accepted at every college I applied to except for 1 Ivy) but timee have changed since I was there and its gotten worse (particularly gang violence, crime, and teachers who are apathetic).

The commute from RVC isnt bad. By car, it took me about 1 hr 15 min door to door from my front door to Grand Central in midtown. I used to go to court in downtown Brooklyn and you have the LIRR service to Atlantic Terminal which is pretty reliable and quick. From Bayside, commuting to Brooklyn is a nightmare because you are on the North shore. Unless you hop onto the LIRR to Penn and then transfer to the subway, its not a fun commute by car from Bayside.

Any other q's, feel free to FM me.

Thanks for the imput. I definately would take subway once i got to Penn to get to my office in Brooklyn. Parking in downtown brooklyn is too much off a hastle. Do you happen to know on average how long it takes from RVC to downtown Brooklyn? We are definately leaning towards RVC but the commute scares me as i work long hours and have a dd i want to see before she goes to bed at night. It is so helpful to me to hear these opinions as it helps me weigh the pros and cons

Any other q's, feel free to FM me.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

I live further east from RVC on the Babylon line (only 1-2 stops) but I would leave my house at 7:45 am and be in Downtown Bklyn by 8:45 am. From RVC, its probably shorter- 40 min or less.

The LIRR has express trains in the AM, so you may hop on at RVC, make it to Jamaica, and the next stop would be Nostrand Ave then Atlantic Terminal..so its even faster...sometimes I would take the Bklyn bound train instead of the one to Penn because it was faster and imvolved less hustling (at Penn I had to transfer to the shuttle at Times Sq to get to the East side where my office was). I would say its 45-50 min from RVC to Bklyn.

I dont think either school is better than the other. Cardozo is viewed as slightly more competitive than Bayside because the local zoned kids were drawn from slightly wealthier sectors (Malba, Whitestone, Oakland Gardens, etc) but the programs were the same...I was initially admitted to Bayside under their Music program (its a magnet school, which means a certain percentage of its students are admitted from all over Queens based on performance tests in Music and Art), then I was placed into the Honors program my junior year which was dramatic because we were only 50-75 students who shared every class and were kept in a nice " bubble" away from the regular kids with lower test scores (C to B minus GPA). Back then, Cardozo had more students on their Chess and Math teams, whereas Bayside had more students enrolled in Orchestra, Tennis and Swimming teams...it evened out.

The fact of the matter is that RVC schools dont hold a candle to Bayside or Cardozo. There is just no contest- the quality of teachers in RVC, the fellow educational/social/economical backgrounds of the student bodies in RVC are superior (IMO) to any high school in Queens ( w the exception of Townsend Harris or the NYC specialized schools like Stuyvesant). There is a reason RVC property taxes are high!! Chat Icon

It is a tough decision and that is why I am trying so hard to find the differences that set one place apart from the next. EclecticEsq10810 and everyone else who has responded so far thanks alot!. I really needed to hear about the differences in the school district and from what you are saying RVC seems to be the better district.

Re: Rockville Centre vs Bayside

If you are comparing schools, besides some teachers on here that can offer much more accurate info/opinions - you can also compare them just be curriculum offerings alone. When I attended, BHS offered maybe 8-10 AP programs for students and they were very limited because only 5 or 10 students were interested in those courses or the school only had 1 teacher to cover it (AP is short for Advanced Placement - which were college-level courses offered to students that allowed them to receive college credit as an incoming freshman).

80% of my senior year courses were AP level and by the time I entered college, I had enough credits to be considered a sophomore. Many in my program had that advantage and it was viewed favorably by college admission officers.
RVC, I am sure, probably offers many more elective courses and AP courses that just weren't available in many Queens High schools.

Just looking at this article proves Southside HS offers 26 classes which is more than the pathetic 10 courses offered at BHS..lol
