Welcoming new neighbors to the 'hood?

What is a nice way of doing it?

We never had anyone stop by and introduce themselves when we moved in, as we live on a very quiet, nice but keep-to-yourself neighborhood.

I kind of like it that way, but I see we are getting new next-door neighbors and I'd like to do something nice for them.

Any ideas?

The last time new neighbors moved in we waited until we saw them outside one day and went over and introduced ourselves. We also got them a gc to our fave local pizzeria.

When we moved in, we had a 5 week old baby, and a lot of the neighbors had heard we had a baby, so they brought over baby gifts. I thought it was really sweet. Of course, that won't work in most cases!

I love the local pizzeria or restaurant gift card idea. As a real estate agent, I'm often asked about local restaurants, bakeries, delis, bagel shops, grocery stores, etc. A nice idea would be to put together a packet or booklet of menus or brochures from local stores and restaurants you recommend in the area, and maybe include a small gift card to one of the places with your booklet! I think that's a thoughtful gift, and something everyone will use (as opposed to something taste-specific).

ditto. Although, i think it was a more of a "let's see what type of people moved into this neighborhood" gesture rather than a "let's bring the new neighbors cookies" gesture. LOL

We have really nice neighbors thank God. Some baked us pumpkin bread and gave us wine and others just stopped by to say hello. One of my neighbors was gonna give us a bunch of local menus because we were new to the neighborhood. I thought that was a great idea! But even just saying hi and introducing yourself is nice.

No one brought us anything!

We are getting new neighbors across the street and this is a good thread for me to follow!

Christine--the house across is in contract! Dying to know who is moving in there!

I know! The listing agent sold it herself. I showed it to an LIF couple a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was a great house, the only real negative being lack of yard space (for those particular people).

I also just showed the split further down your block that just had a price drop this week, but my buyer wanted something more updated. That is a nice house, too, and a GREAT price for a split in N. Bellmore. So I am working hard to get you new neighbors!

We just moved in, and 1 neighbor across the street, wrote us a note saying "welcome to the neighborhood", and gave us a calendar for the Town of Oyster Bay w/all the important phone numbers, and also a $25 Target giftcard.

I thought that was SO nice! I think a bottle of wine, a giftcard, or ANYTHING is a really nice gesture!

We just moved in and most people just waited until they saw us outside to introduce themselves, but 2 young girls from across the street brought over a welcome card and some brownies. They knew we had 2 young kids, so it was really for them. I thought it was extremely thoughtful and it really made us feel welcomed. I will be sure to do something if we ever get new neighbors.

I would get them menus to all the local places that you like... Plus a GC.

My gf did this for us when we moved into our house, I thought it was awesome!

All of the above are such nice gestures!!

No one welcomed us Chat Icon

The man directly across the street introduced himself to DH one day when DH was getting the mail. After Hurricane Irene, as DH and I were carrying the BBQ from our garage back to our patio, the same man ran from his front yard to our backyard, offering to help carry it (uh, a little late lol). He introduced himself to me at that time lol.

We wave to the family next door and that's about it...

Awkward!!

Our next door neighbors left us a box of Crumbs cupcakes on our stoop with a note welcoming us to the neighborhood. They were going to knock but we were out all day. It was such an unexpected, sweet gesture!

Re: Welcoming new neighbors to the 'hood?

My neighborhood has a welcoming committee that I was the chairperson of for a few years. We would bring either small plant or prepackaged bakery item like entemans with the welcome to the neighborhood packet.
We have an optional beach club/ homeowners association so we would make sure they knew how to join.
It seemed like people really appreciated it and I enjoyed meeting my new neighbors.
I'm not on the board or chairing any committees now but when a new neighbor moved in very close to my house recently I went and said hello with fresh eggs from my chickens. Sometimes the chickens "sing" and I always want everyone to know they are mine so they know where the sound is coming from.

I'm sure even a small gesture would be appreciated. No one welcomed us when we moved in. Now, almost 5 years later, we're on waving terms with one neighbor and our other neighbors don't even acknowledge us. When we say hello to them, they always look surprised, like "why are these people talking to us?" Chat Icon I guess they're not into being neighborly.
