Friday 9/30 QOTD
It's Friday, Friday....everybody looking forward to the weekend, weekend...
Happy Friday!
So. In my public speaking class in college, which was chock full of teachers to be (and me, the business major), I remember the class getting on the topic of Disney movies with the professor. The professor who had lil ones at home said that her daughters had not/will not watch Disney movies because of the non-realistic world many portray...and that it sets up these little girls to think that the best they can do in life is be a princess. To my surprise, a nice portion of these teachers to be agreed with the professor! I'd never heard of such a thing.
Finally, my question(s).... What is your take on Disney movies? Will you let your son or daughter watch them? Will you be selective of which ones you show them?

Re: Friday 9/30 QOTD
I think as long as parents reinforce to their children that they can be whatever they want to be and make sure that they understand the difference between real & imagination, there is nothing wrong with Disney movies. I love Disney movies...and still watch them. Heck, Mary Poppins is sitting in my DVD player right now. I want to share my love for Disney with my children..
Also, I think an imagination is healthy for kids.

Re: Friday 9/30 QOTD
I grew up watching Disney movies, and going to Disney world every year and I turned out fine (dh will say otherwise ).
I see nothing wrong with them, and plan on sharing our love for Disney with our future children.

OMG, I LOVE Disney movies!! Growing up my grandma would buy me a new Disney movie every year for Christmas and I LOVED it. I would totally let my child watch them - I think it teaches imagination!

Re: Friday 9/30 QOTD
Great question! I don't see anything wrong with letting my future kids watch Disney movies. I think fantasy and imagination are an important part of development. I think I will be good at making sure my kids have realistic expectations though about what real life is like vs. what fairytales are like. I plan to encourage my daughter(s), if I have any, to work hard and follow a career path that they will love, not just to sit around waiting for their "prince" to sweep them off their feet. I also plan to let them see that, while its great to be in love and have a man who loves you in your life, women can do a lot on their own. But, with all that said, as a very young girl, I LOVED my Barbies and Disney movies, so I wouldn't deprive my daughter of that.

Re: Friday 9/30 QOTD
I will def allow them to watch the movies. I agree that there are too many unrealistic images and subliminal messages for kids but sometimes you have to allow them to just be kids and let them work out it out for themselves.
I have heard this type of argument against Disney movies b/f, specifically regarding body image than becoming a princess. Like a lot of you, I grew up watching the movies and I didnt have body images b/c of Disney. My body images stemmed from those nasty little girls calling me fat b/c I wasnt of the same body build as them.

Re: Friday 9/30 QOTD
I think it is so idiotic to not allow a child to watch Disney movies. IMO there is nothing wrong with a child using their imagination and believing in sweet things like happily ever after. It is part of the innocence of childhood. That being said, my DD (she is 3) LOVES the Disney Princesses and has seen almost every Disney movie. I think it is so cute that she adores Ariel and likes to pretend that she is a princess too. I have zero worries that being exposed to princesses and fairy tales will cause any damage to her as she grows up. I think the whole idea of not allowing your daughters to watch Disney movies is just silly. So silly.

Ariel is my favorite princess too
Thanks everyone for answering! I honestly thought I was the crazy one who has already decided to make a 100 acre wood nursery. But survey says, Disney is a ok! :)

Crashing here...but my mom always took issue with Disney movies bc she said the villians were always fat women and she also calls Ariel a tramp bc of how she is dressed She always let me watch the movies though.
