What's your opinion on couples who match?
So, DH is taking me out for my 30th birthday. He won't tell me where, just that it's somewhere fancy and that I need to dress up. But it's been hard to choose an outfit since I don't know where we're going, and everything I picked DH said wasn't fancy enough. So I finally found a dress that DH said will work for where we're going, and I really like it. The only problem is it's the same exact color as the shirt DH wants to wear. Both are navy blue. DH doesn't see anything wrong with that and wants to still wear the shirt he had planned. So, am I being silly, or will we look like we're heading off to junior prom with our matching outfits?

DH and I have a no matching policy - just our opinion.
Other people do it, so as long as you guys are comfortable - I say go for it.
If you feel strange, could he wear a different shirt? Even a lighter color blue would make it look less intentional.

If it were a bright, loud color like orange or purple or green, I'd say don't do it!! But, navy blue is neutral enough that it's really not that obvious that you're matching (same as if you were both wearing black). I doubt anyone would even notice!

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
I think it looks really silly when it's a bright color of unusually shade that stands out and makes it look obvious that the couple went out of the way to match... but in a case of navy blue I don't see it as match. It's a subdued and very common color that is flattering on most people. (LOVE navy blue, btw)
It's like if you were both wearing black! You are not "matchy", you just live in NY!
drpepper318, I just wanted to add that I swear that I wrote my reply before reading what everyone else said! how funny!!! I could have just quoted you and added ITA!

DH and I match accidentally all the time. We pick out outfits separately and then they wind up matching. People have commented, but oh well. There have been several times where we have to change outfits because they match too well.

Navy is ok because it doesn't look obvious. I'm not a fan of matching couple looks

Same here. We will get dressed separately and then see each other and we match, lol. If it is too much one of us (mostly him since it is much harder for me to find an outfit ) has to change.

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
We don't typically go out of our way....HOWEVER there have been many times that we pick out our outfits and found the other is wearing something very similar. When we 1st started dating we found we even had some his/her versions of shirts, the same car (different color).
So we obviously have similar tastes. The other day he actually was dressing my daughter and when they came down she was wearing the SAME color shirt & shorts....and he hadn't even seen what I was wearing.

I like coordinating, not matchy-matchy.
ETA: Like for a wedding we recently went to- I wore a deep purple dress. DH wore a grey suit, a white/purple pinstripe shirt, and a purple tie with greys mixed in. We looked goooooooood. A completely purple shirt would've been too much IMO.

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
on special occasions DH will pick out a tie that coordinates with my dress, it took me awhile to figure out that he was doing that on purpose
Lately I notice he will come down after I get dressed and match me on accident-just on normal days. I grumble to him about it but never make the effort to go change.
In general, I don't think much about it when others dress alike.

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
i think coordinating or matching is better than clashing
like if you're wearing a pink dress n he wears a red tie

I am not a fan of matching. Coordinating yes but wear the same exact color no. Can your DH wear a different shirt?

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
We do it on accident all the time. But on purpose we dont match but we always make sure we coordinate. Like I wont wear a red dress if he's wearing an orange shirt.

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
I like coordinating outfits.
i.e.- the wedding we just went to I wore a deep purple dress with silver jewelery and black shoes and bag. BF wore a black suit and white dress shirt with a silver tie with purple in it.
Navy is a dark color. I think it will look good together. If it was a loud, vibrant color I would say no, but I think navy dress and him in a navy shirt will look cute.

thanks, everyone! DH went with a different color shirt. I agree with other posters that coordinating colors is nice, but wearing the exact same color would have been a bit much

I agree with this..and we actually had similar outfits for a wedding we went to in July.
If a couple purposely matches for every party and event, I think it is cheesy. I try not to clash with DH, and also try not to over match. There have been times where one of us will purposely change because we will get dressed, and then realize we look too similar.

Re: What's your opinion on couples who match?
Totally depends on the couple. Me and dh never match, but my sister and bil can pull it off. It's her thing, not mine. They look put together, not like they are going to the junior prom.

We are definitely not that couple. Coincidentially we might have on black tops but nothing planned.

We just bought DH a new suit last night, and got him a white shirt and burgundy tie, since I just bought a burgundy dress to wear to a wedding next month. Do you think that is too matchy? I just thought it would look nice to be coordinated.
