thyroid and pregnancy

my DH and I were TTC until i went to my endocronlogist and discovered that I have a thyroid issue. My Dr. told me to stop TTC until my levels are good. My thyroid was very underactive. I've been on snythroid for about a couple of months. My follow up is in 3 weeks. I'm hoping my levels are good enough to start trying again. (my Dr. said getting pregnant with low thyroid levels could lead to low IQ for the baby). Do you know of anyone with thryoid issues? and if so, how long do you think it will take to get my levels good enough to TTC again?

Interesting. My RE mentioned that normal thyroid levels is extremely important. I didn't know why.

Re: thyroid and pregnancy

It took me almost 4 months to get my thyroid numbers right. I had to change the medication several times. I still go for testing every few months. My doctor unforuntately still changes the amount sometimes.

Good Luck!

Re: thyroid and pregnancy

no doctor ever mentioned the low iq thing to me... but regardless, i was extremely hyperthyroid, had a large nodule removed (along with 1/2 of the thyroid gland) so I am now hypothyroid and am on synthroid (have been since my surgery in January 2010). we started not being careful around september 2010, started paying closer attention around december 2010, and i got pregnant in january 2011. levels have been fine throughout my pregnancy (have been checked at least 1x per trmester).

if you've been on synthroid for 2 months i'm sure your levels should be fine by now if the dosage was correct (meaning they didn't grossly underestimate or overestimate how much you need)

i have an under-active thyroid too but my medication has my levels correct so i was told i can ttc without worrying
my general doctor did say though that once i get prego i would need to come in more regularly for testing to make sure the levels remain good

Re: thyroid and pregnancy

I was diagnosed a few yrs ago and have had "normal" levels for a while now. I still was not feeling well and asked my endo about it and he raised it a bit. I got prego right away and now that I am, he raised it some more and has been monitoring it every 3 months. One of my docs told me that it is extremely important to have the right level of hormones especially in the third tri because of development. He did not elaborate.

Re: thyroid and pregnancy

When I first started TTC my period was getting later and later (but all negative tests) until finally it stopped coming altogether and I went to my OBGYN who ran some tests and she was the one who told me I was hypothyroid (under active).

I went to an endocrinologist and I have hashimoto's as well and other than it messing with my cycles I was asymptomatic (so it came as a shock).

It only took about two months to get my levels to where they should be once I was on synthroid. After that it took about 3 months to get pregnant (two with very, very concerted efforts) and my levels were closely monitored while pregnant.

Unfortunately it ended in miscarriage but it has not been attributed to my thyroid issues since the highest my TSH ever hit was 2.99 during the time I was pregnant.
