Since it’s “hump” day. I tried to come up with a sexy question, but I couldn’t think of one. Then, I thought of: Spanking… But not the sexy kind, the baby kind.

Do you believe in spanking?

I do not. I think there are more effective ways of getting your point across (like time-outs, etc.). But, I don’t have kids yet- so who knows what will happen in the future.
DH on the other hand, believes in it. He says a light tap on the butt or the hand works.

I agree with your DH. I would try to talk first, then a time-out, but I can imagine it being hard trying to reason with a screaming toddler. The spanking is more for the shock factor, not to hurt them.

Generally no, but maybe as a last resort a light tap more as a shock factor like the PP said.

Re: * QOTD 9/14 *

Now that we have a 2yo DD I have noticed that once I smacked her hand for doing something wrong/dangerous she immediately got more violent toward me and tried to hit me. I'm starting to re-think spanking's effectiveness BUT I wouldn't say that I am against it. God knows it worked for me!! As soon as I heard my mom open the drawer in the kitchen to get the wooden spoon I was gone!!! Chat Icon

I am not a Mom either...but I have yet to see spanking work on the kids I work with and the kids in my family. I feel that there are other ways...but again...not a Mother yet.

I don't really believe in spanking because ultimately, I don't think it does anything more than relieve YOUR stress in the moment. It doesn't really deter or prevent unwanted behavior. That being said, I have given my DD (now 3) a light smack on the hand when she's done something wrong (like hit the dog) but then I felt SO stupid after having done it because I realize that it must be SO confusing her when I am telling her NOT to hit but then I smacked her hand. Totally a mixed message. So I've stopped that and rely on time outs which work quite well, it drives her crazy to have to sit out for 3 min and by the time her 3 minutes are up she is calmed down and she apologizes for whatever it is she did and then goes back to playing nicely. It's so much more effective than yelling or smacking IMO. Chat Icon

I honestly don't know.....a few pp have made good points about how it makes no sense to hit (tap, lightly smack, etc) a child.

Not spanking, but possibly a swift hand to the butt if they're misbehaving.
I got it as a kid and it instilled fear of my parents (not like terrified but respect, and not wanting to get in trouble)

Not particularly. I used to work in foster care, so I've seen the extreme cases where spanking starts out as spanking and then becomes SO much more.

My parents never spanked me as a kid, and I turned out fine (if I do say so myself). I believe there are plenty of other forms of discipline. If anything, it would be an ABSOLUTE last resort and only in extreme cases.

Re: * QOTD 9/14 *

I do not believe in it at all. I was spanked as a child, and while, yes,I was scared of my parents whenever the spoon came out, I feel like it just made me angry towards them.

As a teacher, I obviously am not allowed to spank the children, no matter how angry I am, and I find that other methods of discipline work just fine. So, even though I am not a mother yet and don't have my own children, I know for sure that I will not spank my children.

No because I was never spanked as a child and I turned out fine.
