Shared our name...long
We had decided from the beginning we would not share our name. DH told his friend if he guessed it he would tell him. So after four days he finally guessed right. So since his friend knew we figured it was only right to tell our families. We are both Italian, DH is first generation and I am second. So we were going with Logan which is not Italian at all. My mother said when you think of a Logan you think of blonde hair and light eyes not olive skin and dark hair. DH's mother who is right off the boat can't even pronounce it and was surprised that we were picking such an unpopular name!!!! She really did not like it, she said whatever you like. My sister liked it and my grandmother said it's ok if it's what you like. No one loved it at all...I can tell and this is exactly why I did not want to share. But now I am feeling discouraged and second guessing our choice.
I know DH has wanted to use his name for a long time. His name is Anthony, so I am thinking of just going with Anthony with a middle name that starts with J and he can possibly be an AJ.
I just don't know what to do. There are only 2 weeks and left and LO can come at any time. I don't want to start from scratch all over again and there aren't that many boy names I liked to begin with.
We were on the fence about Matteo or Matthew but DH would want Anthony as the middle name and then his initials would be MAD.
Ugghh just so frustrated right now. Of course this will add to my sleeplessness of the third trimester.
If you have any suggestions please give them to me....sorry this is so long.

Re: Shared our name...long
Just stick with it! I have friends and family who named their children unusual names and got alot of unfriendly comments from family and friends. One family member was actually really mad. It has been a few years now, and that is their names. You couldn't imagine them without that name. Everyone gets used to it. Any name you choose, someone is not going to like it. It is your child and your choice. Don't let them make you feel bad. Logan is a very nice name and is not so uncommon anymore. It's actually pretty far up the popular baby name list I think. I was the same as you when people would ask me what my name choices where with DS. When I would tell people his name (Shane) I got lots of either nice comments, or not so nice. Once I told someone one of my girl name choices and I got a "Really!! Are you making that name up" It wasn't even that unusual (Liliana).
Stick with it!!!
P.S. Logan was my second choice after Shane for DS. So you can say I really like it. LOL

ITA with the previous posters. It stinks that your families aren't being supportive of your decision but if you love the name, then forget what they think. I love the name Logan and they will learn to love it too when they meet your precious little guy

Re: Shared our name...long
It just put such a damper on the name. I was so excited we finally agreed. It took us so long to come to a name. DH's family are all off the boat so I can imagine that all of them with their strong accents would not be able to pronounce Logan. I think it's a fairly popular name that's easy to spell and say but I just don't know now.
I lost a lot of sleep over this last night and I am thinking that maybe I will stick with Logan or maybe go with Anthony and some J name for the middle who knows lol. I kind of like Anthony Jace and he can either be Anthony or AJ. I love Matthew and Matteo but I just can't give my son the initials MAD. I feel like that can be not so nice for him.

Re: Shared our name...long
The REASON we never told anyone about our name choice is that before baby is officially named, they TRY to change it.
Logan is a beautiful name & is popular & masculine.
Also, I don't think of blond kids when I hear the name...
When I think of Logan... I picture:

I love the name Logan.
My MIL is from El Salvador. Every name that I mention, DH says, do you think my mom can pronounce it? Eff that, she'll LEARN how to pronounce it. I love english and irish names. I'm not into spanish or italian names. Too bad, it's my child!
Maybe you can take on that same attitude? GL!

Re: Shared our name...long
I LOVE the name Logan!!! I just can't DH on board.
We had similar reactions when we told family our picks for DD and DS. Like "Oh, really?" Or "no, you can't do that".
But you know, I've learned that what we like is not what everyone else would like. And for some reason they feel the need to express this. I try not to let it bother me. I'm sure we will go thru it again this time. The other thing I learned, is that both my kids names suit them. And everyone who had those opinions, couldn't imagine them being named anything else.
So go with what makes YOU and DH happy. Everyone else will jump on board eventually.

Re: Shared our name...long
I feel for you. This is the reason I am terrified to share our names with my family. We told them the name of our first DD after much prying and I was so nervous they'd have a bad reaction. Fortunately, they didn't. But this time around I don't think we will share.
That being said, if you and DH still love the name by all means USE it! Your family will grow to love it and in time won't be able to picture little Logan as anything but. I personally LOVE the name and don't think you need to go with an Italian name just because he will be Italian. Please don't let your families' reaction color how you feel about the name. It is so personal and you've already gotten your head and heart invested in a name you love for YOUR child.

My MIL isn't from the US either...she just says our kids' names as they come. While she was very opinionated before the birth, she has never said anything negative afterwards...actually she has been supportive.

Re: Shared our name...long
People who do not share their names are really smart (i am NOT one of them, I share every name we like and always have these situations also ).
Regardless of what I tell you I know how hard it is to use a name once your mom or MIL says they don't like it bc I am in the same position.
I have no real advice here except whatever you name the baby will be his identity and they will learn to love it

<3 LOGAN! (I am probably choosing that name also!)
Dont listen to other peoples opinions. Regardless of the name you mention, someone will have something to say!!!!
The same thing happened when I shared my daughters name. I still went with it and I love it and cannot imagine her with any other name.
Good luck!

Re: Shared our name...long
Let me tell you, I went through something similar. I wanted to name DS Charlie after my grandfather. My SIL gave me such a hard time about it and put so much doubt in my mind that DS did not have a name until he was 4 days old. And its not Charlie, its Christopher.
If you want to name him Logan, name him Logan. Don't listen to what others have to say. But just so you know, and this is the God's honest truth, the name begins to not matter any more after they are born. They just become their name. And the baby is what makes you love the name, so in the end, if you name him Logan, Matteo (which if I had an Italian last name, maiden name is, married a Greek, would have been my son's name) Matthew, or Anthony, you will love the name because you will associate it with DS. I promise I have no regrets not naming my son Charlie, especially now that Im' probably naming my daughter Charlotte and callng her Charlie

Re: Shared our name...long
Thank you all for your kind words. I think if it were not my mother or MIL I wouldn't really be affected by someones opinions but I feel like these are two really important people. I feel so upset about it all and it's kind of ruined for me. I think DH and I are going to have to have a long talk about this today. But I am really starting to love the name Anthony Jace so we will see.

Re: Shared our name...long
I have this problem too. DH and I agreed that we would not share names with anyone. But DH has a big mouth and told everyone, even looking for an opinion as to if the name is ok. People either loved the name we chose or hated it. Now, we know we are having a boy and my mom asked what his name is and I told her the same name. She said, "Oh I thought you would have changed that now that you know you are having a boy." I said nope, I can not imagine him having any other name. No matter what you choose, someone will have something to say. In the end, it is your child and you should be choosing what his/her name should be. People will come around no matter what their first impression was.

Re: Shared our name...long
My advice is:
WHO THE FLIP CARES??????
IMHO, you dont have to please anyone but yourself and DH! If you LOVE the name, stay with it. Period.
Frankly, after the baby is born, and everyone falls in love with him (lets say 2 min after they hold him) they arent going think "Logan, sucky name". They are going to think "OMG, I love little Logan so much".
Who cares what THEY think. YOU should be happy.

Re: Shared our name...long
I'm in the minority here, but I would change the name. I love the name Logan but in your position I'd probably go with Matteo.
Your DH is first generation Italian, it would mean alot to me to honor that. I'm Latina and for me it's important that whatever name we choose translate well into English and Spanish....I want to ensure my family abroad can pronounce it properly.
Good luck!

Re: Shared our name...long
I love the name Logan.
Heres the few issues I see... I would also be hurt if my family hated the name thats why we also chose not to say a word...we didnt. Now that your name is revealed I would have the same feelings as you, like it needed to be changed. I cant lie either, I see Logan with blonde hair blue eyes, not Italian BUT again who cares what others think. IMHO...do what makes you and DH happy. If you are unhappy bc everyone hates it then change it. If you can deal with them then go with your initial decision. Its so hard. Your situation makes me SO not want to say anything even more.
