Mosquitos....please help!

We just moved into our first house. We lived in the city prior, so I am not use to these mosquitos.

We want to enjoy our backyard....but everytime we are outside we get eaten alive. I have about twelve mosquito bites from yesterday while I was out there for two hours.

Is this all of long island, or just my house?

What do you use. I am desperate for any tips or items to buy!!!! Chat Icon

Thank you!!!

make sure there is no standing water on your property, they breed there. make sure no pools in the area (neighbors) are stagnant...

im sure there might be chemicals that you can put down, maybe call a local landscapper just be careful with animals and your DD

Plant mint! It's a natural mosquito repellant, and you can always use it in recipes Chat Icon

When you're going to be in your yard for extended lengths of time, just crush a few of the leaves to release their oils. Mosquitos hate it!

Getting rid of standing water is a big help - look for things like garbage can lids, etc., with water sitting in them.

Also, mosquitos are most active around sunset, so if you're outside then, that's when you're most likely to be bitten. If you're sitting out by the bbq at 7pm, make sure you're wearing long pants and at least a short-sleeve teeshirt to minimize the damage.

Enjoy the new home! I'm a City girl too and I love having a backyard for the first time!

I rarely sit in the yard bc of mosquitos and after dark the most horrific bugs! It's really bad I don't know what to do about them short of ripping out all things green and cementing!

I have a pool so no way am I getting rid of water!! We just bought a moquito machine from terminix. When they were here treating our house for termites, the guy mentioned it to my husband and we just ordered it because I am just fed up. It was pricey but I'm hoping we use it for years and it's worth it! I'll let ya know, it's supposed to get delivered today!!!

First - to Kris... I encourage you to come over. I will have you stand in our backyard with Bear. There is an enormous mint plant overgrowing the back of the house. Hang back there for just 10 minutes, and let's see if you get any mosqito bites Chat Icon

And to address the OP...... yeah we have the same problem over here. It's definitely not just your house, promise. I get bitten walking from my driveway to front door when I get home from work. Talk to Robert. I'm hesitant to have any spraying done bc i'm PG, which is why we haven't asked. GL!

our problem (i'm in nassau too) is that we don't have "regular" mosquitos--we have the Asian Tiger mosquitos and they are out ALL DAY long! they're not sunset mosquitos and they attack with a vengeance. even when i wear cutter spray, they land on me! Chat Icon Chat Icon

i've tried everything--nothing seems to work except staying inside Chat Icon

oh yeah? what kind do you have? I want to get one for the house here in NY. The one I have in TX covers up to an acre and it's a 55 gallon drum unit installed on the side of the house with tubing ran all across the entire back and side yard and overhang and pool area.. the pool company had to install it.. it wasn't something I could do myself..I've looked for distributers here in NY but I could only find those zappers and sucking ones lol

When I lived in Nassau, I was attacked even if I was outside for 2 mins. It was just awful. And no standing water anywhere near my home or neighborhood. They would get into my home often. Now that I live in Suffolk, I have only had 2 bites all summer (KNOCK WOOD).

They make a spray you can use on your yard for them. I think its cutter who makes it. We spray every few weeks and it has helped a lot.

Here is the one they have on their site. http://www.terminix.com/mosquitosentry/

They make 3 versions of it though, we bought the monster one because our yard is a decent size.

I'm in Brooklyn and we have these in addition to the 'regular' mosquitoes. They are ruthless!! We have started using the cutter spray and it seems to help a little. I've also heard that marigolds are a natural mosquito repellant. That will be my next move...a yard full of marigolds Chat Icon

Re: Mosquitos....please help!

My cousin recently had a outdoor 1st bday party for her DD...she said her backyard was pretty buggy...but her DH got this mosquito "bomb" type thing he did the morning of the party...and she said it was actually gross...she went outside later on and was shocked at how many dead bugs she found lying around her backyard and on her table...but hey..I guess it worked...no one that night was complaining of bugs..and she didnt need any candles or anything..I am sorry I dont know the name/brand she used...but I will def look into that when we have our next outdoor party!
