neighborhood watch used to be popular but not so much anymore. Yes the neighbors get together and keep an eye on each other. One neighborhood where we had it growing up people have assigned days so that there was always someone "watching".

My parents live in a neighborhood watch community in MD. Like PP said, neighbors take shifts "watching" the neighborhood. They don't do it that seriously, there is a nearby neighborhood that has a special car for it and everything, but basically it is a crime deterrent. In other words, just b/c a neighbor is away or at work, other neighbors are watching their house. My parent's neighborhood is small and very tight, TGIF parties weekly, caroling, tree ligthings, everyone knows everyone.

We are in a "Neighborhood Watch Community", but I have no idea what it really means. I never see anyone "patrolling the street."
I guess people do watch out house when we are not here though. We were away during a snow storm and our neighbors shoveled for us.
