Homeowners Insurance that will allow Rottweiler?

DH and I are in contract on a new house and starting the hunt for Insurance. But from what we are hearing, it's going to be very hard for us to find a company who will insure us because of our Rottweiler.

Does anyone have a Rottie or Pitbull (they are on the same list as bad dogs - NO WAY) and your insurance didn't give you an issue?

TIA

I would contact a broker. They have access to more companies and some might be willing to write you with an exclusion for the dog.

If you would like a recommendation FM me and I will give you the name and number of my broker.

I second this.

I am a commercial broker and always feel personal brokers are unnecessary UNLESS you have a situtation that requires special handling then they are worth every penny they earn!

They have more experience shopping for things that are not common place.

So I say go broker!

DH is talking to a private broker as of right now. He's looking into some options for us.

Thanks

I am with State Farm and they never asked. Travelors dropped me because they saw my first rotty in the window. From then on I had two lab mixes if anyone asked!

Definitely use a broker. We don't have a dog, but we had other situations that made it impossible for us to find insurance on our own.

Until god forbid someone files a claim against you and your insurance company won't cover you, leaving the other person to sue you personally and putting everything you own on the line.

Huge risk!

If they never asked, how would you even know it wasn't covered? We got out pit mix after we bought the house and the issue never came up. Chat Icon

It's your responsibility to tell them you own a dog.

I would read the coverage details of your insurance policy, because it's very possible you aren't covered at all for dog issues, regardless of breed, if the insurance company doesn't think you have one.

Re: Homeowners Insurance that will allow Rottweiler?

According to our mortgage broker, if you don't put the dog on it is a HUGE risk. It's not just for bites. If she knocks down a child in my driveway, or scratches someone (which she does sometimes when trying to paw at you), they can sue you and if she isn't on the policy, you're asking for a whole lot of trouble.

We found out having her on the policy will cost us an extra $50 per month. I think that is INSANE! But out of over 20 companies, that was the ONLY one that would take her and the fact that we are close to water too, this place is our only option (State Farm wants no part in any of it). So it's what we have to do.

At least now I can have a clear head if she ever does anything out of the ordinary. And I can put a HUGE SIGN on my front gate BEWARE OF DOG without worrying my insurance co will drop us if they see it and start asking ???'s.

Re: Homeowners Insurance that will allow Rottweiler?

SF does ask but there are two questions following which are,

has it ever bit anyone?

and then

Is the dog trained for attack purposes?

As long as those two are NO, there is no reason you would not be covered.

Dogs are an exposure regardless of what breed it is.

Re: Homeowners Insurance that will allow Rottweiler?

I know about State Farm being ok with big dogs if they aren't trained for attack, but they are not accepting homes by the water (as of now at least). So we can't use them for that reason. and that stinks bc I was really hoping to use them.

.

I have an American Bulldog that looks like a pit. I got her after we got the house and did not add her on. Honestly I don't feel it's a huge risk at all. I'm a very responsible dog owner. A chihuahua can hurt a child and many of them are nasty too. I think it's a prejudice practice to judge a dog on it's breed. I understand this is based on percentage of cases with the breed though. My dog is well trained. As well as any lab. No need IMO to add her on to my ins policy. Just my opinion of course. If it makes you feel better to spend the 50 a month then thats good.

I work for Homeowners co. Calims manager.. Please..disclose the dog.. if something happens and you don't..youll be dropped.. ...but to not disclose is just a risk you shouldn't be willing to take...

I hate seeing people saying to decieve the Isurance companies.. but when someone goes to sue you.. we are the first people you NEED to call for help...Chat Icon

I wouldn't think a bulldog would do much to an insurance premium, but I honestly don't know. My parents had miniature dachshunds when I was growing up, and some of them were nasty, so I totally get what you are saying.

If you don't think he's a risk, that's totally fine. Like all types of insurance, you are betting on something not happening. Just understand that if it does, you probably are going to be held personally liable and in this sue-happy nation of ours, I don't think that should be taken lightly, especially with breeds that are prone to having issues like the OP's.
