Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
I have the bumper that came with my set for when it's safe to use when the baby gets older.
I bought the breathable bumpers, but it doesn't fit right in my crib. It just kind of slumps over and doesn't attach right.
Is it okay to go "bumperless" for the baby? Is it dangerous, at all, to NOT have bumpers?

I have both but right now we are only using the breathable. At first I couldn't get it right because I have a solid back crib. But read instructions and pull it through tight and now it looks great. U can do it.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
I don't plan to use a bumper, cribs aren't designed to need them anymore (the slats are far enough apart so that limbs/head won't get stuck)

It's not about them getting stuck it's about them not bumping into the slats and hurting themselves. DD isn't even five months old and she moves all the way around the crib. It would hurt if she moved quickly into the slats. The bumper is like a cushion in between that.
I would do a youtube search of how to put the breathable bumpers on.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
not to freak anyone out but i read somewhere there's a stronger correlation between having bumpers and SID. i think it was the Baby Bargains book where i read that. something about having bumpers and stuffed animals in the crib can contribute to SID....

They do, that's why many people use the breathable ones.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
i never put bumpers onthe crib with my son and it was fine
if they move it is pretty slow and it does not wake them up
and when they are older they move faster but bumbers can help them climb out so they are not good

Do you feel the breathable bumpers are enough of a "cushion" for the baby?
I will look into how this will fit better on our crib. We'll try again.
Thanks!

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
I didn't have anything in there with DD#1 until she started rolling around and getting her limbs caught and her pacifiers kept rolling out and she couldnt find them. Probably around 5 months, then I put in the breathable bumpers.
IMO - I really dont think DD would be able to roll around fast enough to get hurt. The thought never even crossed my mind.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
I didn't use any bumpers with DS. I didn't want to use the regular bumpers bc of the increased risk of SIDS and the breathable bumpers didn't fit the crib correctly because the slats are very wide. Honestly, the breathable ones are so thin that they don't really provide much of a cushion anyway. DS would sometimes bump his head but never hard enough to leave a mark or do any damage.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
It's fine. I did not use any bumpers for a while. Sure, DD rolls around and may hit her head but she does that everywhere she goes and it is not like she takes a running start and throws herself into the sides. I then put up breathable bumpers so she wouldnt see me checking on her if she was laying down, also fine but I dont think they do anything

This is exactly why I got the breathable ones. I am using mini cribs and there are only 2 slats open, but I figure my odds are better this way!

Agreed. I bought breathable bumpers but because of the solid ends on my crib, I have a feeling they will not work. If they dont, its no bumpers. I think the baby will be fine.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
We found DD one morning with her arm through a slat almost all the way up to her shoulder. We put the breathable bumpers on that day.
Definitely try the breathable bumpers again. They come with 2 sets of instructions; one for cribs that have slats all the way around, and one for cribs that have a solid back. DH and I set it up totally wrong the first time bc we didn't see the 2nd set of instructions.
If the breathable ones still don't work, my friend found and uses these...
Try these!
They're a little on the expensive side, but she loves them (they look cute too )
eta: looks like they're on sale right now

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
I think it is actually safer to use no bumper-- there are strangulation risks, an increased risk of SIDS, and once baby is older, he can use it to climb out. The only things you really need for the crib itself are a mattress cover and sheets.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
Yes. The biggest or most serious risk is SIDs or suffocation and having no bumpers decreases the odds of either of those significantly.
We use the breathable bumpers because DC have caught their limbs in the slats and the bumpers help prevent that. Also, it keep the pacifiers in the crib, which is nice too.
However, if for some reason I couldn't use a breathable bumper with my crib, I would go with no bumper at all. I haven't heard of any instances of fatalities from lack of cushioning in the crib, but sids and suffocation are very real.

Re: Is it okay to not use ANY bumper?
I used the bumper from our bedding set with DD until she was 4-5 months old and then took them out because I found her face squished up against them. She was bumperless for about 3 days until she A- was stuck sideways with her head jammed in to the slates and couldn't roll over, and B- would ALWAYS get a leg stuck out of the crib and wake up SCREAMING! I bought breathable bumpers and have had no issues at all. It was tricky to get them on right and they never looked as "nice" as regular ones, but she slept better and I felt better knowing she could breath. Did you get the right bumper? I know they make at least 2. 1 for any crib and 1 designed, I think, for flat back cribs as well.
