Queens to Suffolk? E. Npt./Commack. How did you adjust?
We are in the process of selling our home in Queens & are thinking of moving to the E. Npt./Commack area. We really like the area & keep coming back to it. My questions is that we have children & would like to be in a kid friendly area. How did you ladies adjust? Do you feel you made the right choice for your family. And input would be appreciated! TIA

That is the area we are looking in once we sell this house.
But I responded to your post bc right now we are in western nassau but I grew up in queens and DH and I bought our first house there as well (in Howard Beach).
So I cant say about adjusting as we did take one step and move to nassau but we really love the Commack, Smithtown area but yes totally totally different than queens and tbh different from where we are now.
I have heard great things about the area, good schools and if you buy in the ENP/NP SD your taxes will also tend to be lower bc of the presence of LIPA.
I am by no means an expert bc for months I asked tons and tons of questions on here and so many girls helped me so I am sure they will help you too.
I am praying we sell soon so I can stop casually looking at houses in that area and start my real search.
Good luck to you.

Re: Queens to Suffolk? E. Npt./Commack. How did you adjust?
We just moved from Brooklyn to Suffolk County. We are both native Brooklynites, and we couldn't wait to get away from the city - after 30 years there, we were more than ready for life in the 'burbs.
We are glad we chose Suffolk. We really like the large lot and house size as well as the overall feel of the neighborhood. We both work in the city but haven't minded the commute on the LIRR (yet lol) because we had been commuting by subway for at least an hour each way when living in BK.
We don't have kids yet but picked this particular area (Smithtown) because we were told that it was a great, family-orientated community. We had also looked (and liked) Commack, Hauppauge, E. Northport & Kings Park.
Friends and family cannot believe how "far" we are...when really, its just 50 miles - travel at the right time and I can make it to BK in an hour, which is fine for us.
No complaints so far except...we were unaware of the upcoming construction on 347 (aka Smithtown Bypass or Nesconset Highway). It's a huge traffic reconfiguration project spanning the next 5 - 10 years. Definitely keep that in mind if you choose to look at homes near that roadway.
If you have any questions, please FM me.
Good luck!

I'm a Queens transplant in Commack/E. Npt! We don't have any kids, but have a lot of friends who do. It's a really kid-friendly area. In my opinion, most of LI is. Beaches, parks, bowling--all within a short drive or walk. I'm in the Commack school district, but address is East Northport. If you have any other questions let me know.

Love the suburbs. But then again, I never liked Manhattan or anyplace congested anyway. So much more to do for families.

Re: Queens to Suffolk? E. Npt./Commack. How did you adjust?
We lived in Nassau and then moved to South Shore Suffolk. We lived there for 6 years.
While it was a change, we got used to it. Biggest issue is distance from friends in Western Nassau and Queens.
Last year, we moved to Suffolk, North Shore. Northport.
I am still having a hard time adjusting.
Yes, it is beautiful, great schools and great for families. We are very clothes to nice parks and beaches.
For me, I feel a little to far from civilization. I miss Sunrise Hwy, Southern State and shopping... Manhasset, Westbury,etc..

Just curious bc we too are looking in that roundabout area. I love shopping in Westbury,( Manhasst I WOULD love to shop mor often ) but I guess what I am curious about is in that area are you saying you don't feel like you have that same surplus of stores, choices etc. For me I felt that Jericho Turnpike had TONS of stores, places to eat, supermarkets etc. Am I wrong? Just wnat to know for my own info, and I dont mean to hijack this thread

I think its probably just what you are used to. I grew up in Northport and there is everything you would need within 20 mins.....2 malls (walt whitman, smithaven) and tons of stuff on Jericho. There arent as many big chain restaurants as there are in other areas but there are amazing independant ones.

Re: Queens to Suffolk? E. Npt./Commack. How did you adjust?
I think it also depends how far North you are, when on the North shore. If you are North all the way by the water, it tacks on an extra 12-15 mins just to get to main strips of shopping, etc. I guess that could be tiresome to people used to being by Merrick Rd, Sunrise, etc, close to highways, etc.

We moved from Queens to Commack about 1 year ago. I still work in Queens. All of our family is in Nassau.
We love it out here. Initially, everyone kept commenting on how far away it was, but really it's not bad at all.

Re: Queens to Suffolk? E. Npt./Commack. How did you adjust?
I didn't move to Suffolk, but I did leave Queens after almost 9 years to move to Putnam County, which I would guess is similar to Suffolk, maybe a bit less congested/more rural.
For me, the biggest adjustment was the lack of walkability. In Queens I had a car but took care of most of my needs on foot. Now, I can't walk anywhere. I really miss that, and having to drive 10+ minutes to get to a supermarket or drugstore still aggravates me a bit.
Otherwise, I have grown to love the quiet, and the fact that people are friendlier and more open. I lived in a building where no one said hello and I never even saw most of the people who lived on my floor; it didn't even occur to me to go around and meet the neighbors when I moved here. I regret that now, that I became so insulated. There is lots less traffic and 1000x more natural beauty. It definitely took a while, and I will always miss aspects of Queens, but I do love where I live. It just takes time.

It does depend how far North you were but I was north of 25A and the 20mins to the malls still spplied.....you learn the back roads and which ways are the quickest.

Re: Queens to Suffolk? E. Npt./Commack. How did you adjust?
We moved from VS(Queens border basically) to SW Suffolk and LOVE it! My DH made the sacrifice because he drives a company truck into Manhattan everyday but he wouldn't have it any other way. Ours kids are raised in an area we love, thats not congested and everything we hoped it would be. I wouldn't move back to Nassau unless it was set back behind a gate and up on a hill and I doubt that will happen....

We just moved to Commack and love it! My DH grew up in Queens and still commutes there for work. Even though it is a lengthier commute and an adjustment, he loves living here! He loves the size of our property, the neighborhood, the shopping, less congestion... we wouldn't have it any other way!
