I hear this is normal, but of course I love to hear what you guys all think!

How long did it take to be back to your normal financial situation? Do you regret anything?

We're not bad, but I know I spent more this year than I ever have (or will) in my entire life.

We bought our house a year ago and still feel this way.....we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.......in the far far distance.

Oh heck yeah. It took a few years before we felt a little better- and some major renovations.

Not broke, but def not whooping it up. We bought below our means, have a mortgage that doesnt kill us, and live below what we could. We did things as they needed. Changed nothing immediatly, like appliances and what not. We painted, did floors and repaired all walls prior to moving in. Having a FIL wgo is a contractor helped. They took no money from us. We also know a bunch of people in drywall and other house fields, so that helped.

We bought our house, got married, and were pregnant all within one year. We are approaching our 3rd wedding anniversary and still feel broke. We are still not complete with renovations, and have done them as we could afford to. It's hard, but we made it possible.

We bought a house 1.5 years ago and I do not think we ever felt broke. We bought a house well within our means, which allowed us to still have a decent amount saved. Since then we have pretty much continued to spend the same way we always had (although we are by nature savers not spenders).

Additionally, we did not feel compelled to immediately furnish/decorate our house. Instead, we have done it little by little. We only just got master bedroom furniture in April after being married almost 4 years.

No, not broke but I do feel like we are always working on something with the house and that money just flies out of our hands.

basically it just feels like money comes and money goes so much more quickly. "spending money" turns into house repairs and things for the house very quickly and easily the first year... but it gets better.Chat Icon

Re: Did you feel broke the first year or two in your home?

We just hit the one year mark and are still feeling the hit but do see a light at the end of the tunnel. I also went to an 80% schedule shortly after we moved into our house which was a hit to our income. With baby #2 on the way soon I'm SO glad we decided we could swing it but it's been tough.

We had to completely redo our kitchen and bought a bunch of new furniture as well.

I am just starting to feel it! We closed in January 10 days after my twins were born. We set aside a good amount of money for furniture, renovations, decorating etc and we are just starting to "run out". Now I just feel like I have to prioritize what needs to be done/bought especially since I haven't worked since December.

So far, so good. We are renovating the bathroom soon. We stay home a lot more but still have a social life.

Our bills our certainly higher than when we lived in an apartment. But that means we are saving slower and we are also enjoying our home more.

A few of my friends bought homes within the last two years so we are all in the same mindset.

Re: Did you feel broke the first year or two in your home?

Yes. Between the closing costs, the costs of moving, getting used to the higher monthly payment of a mortgage compared to rent, having to buy more furniture, doing the painting and repairs we wanted to do, and then dealing with all unexpected repairs and expenses that came up if something broke or we realized we needed something we hadn't anticipated (like a lawnmower!)... it was financially stressful for the first year for sure!
