Those with dogs - where do they do their business?

We are moving to a house (with an actual backyard (!) from the city soon and i am wondering what is usually done about dogs going to the bathroom on lawns. At my parents house we usually let our dog go where he wants. But now, with our own lawn, and a toddler and new baby on the way, I shudder thinking that we'll all be frolicking around barefoot in dog pee and leftover poop remnants.

Do you keep them to a certain area of the yard? Walk them on the street?

TIA!

when i was younger and had a dog, my parents made a kennel in the backyard for him(put down some paving stones and fenced it in with a tall chainlink fence/gate) ..it was the best, he went to the one spot and never had to worry about "landmines" in the back lol..i always swore when i eventually get my own dog i was going to do the same..hth

you can train your dog to go in 1 spot you designate. From day 1 of having your dog there, you will have to take him/her directly to that spot (on leash) & wait for them to go.. make a big fuss when they do. you have to bring the dog straight there every time & after a while they learn that is their spot to go. It's a lot harder to break them of going wherever they want once they've been allowed to, so try to stick to it from the beginning.

It takes time & effort on your part.. but worth it in the long run to not be stepping in anything! Chat Icon

We do both, they go wherever in the backyard and then we walk them. We picked up poop immediately when we got our first dog because he used to eat it. Chat Icon

He doesn't do that anymore but DH makes sure the yard is clean before he mows every week. We walk them every day and bring a water bottle with us to dilute pee so it doesn't burn anyone's grass.

We always walked them out in the street. In the winter snowy days we only let then go in the bricked patio in the yard. My dad would put a temporary fence around it.

We let them go wherever they want but we pick it up immediately. The pee..eh, doesn't worry me too much. You know how many random animals are peeing in my yard anyway? Worse than my dogs who are vaccinated, I might add. And we never walk barefoot, too many bees and bugs on the ground anyway. We always used to walk them on the street, esp in Nassau when I lived there. But now in Suffolk most people dont walk their dogs (at least where I live, so I am sure they rather my dog not be on their lawn) and there is a dangerous dog we dont like passing. So we started yard only.

As for yard, we wish we had just one area. I would say try to start that from the beginning and just pick up all poops immediately.

we put our dog on leash in our yard so that it limits how far she can run out and pee/poop. it works cause we know its all in a designated area. but whenever we're in the yard with her she doesnt stay on the leash, so then we just keep an eye on her to see where she poops and clean it up immediately.

We have a dog run along the side of our house. They go in there, so everything is contained.

i think we may be putting in a dog run on the side of our new house. we also have a toddler and i would prefer to contain everything to one area that we can keep him out of! Chat Icon

Currently we let them go anywhere BUT we are trying to train out puppy to go in one specific spot. We figure the older will either follow suit or not.

Most of the time we walk our pup up the block to an empty lot that's there and she does her business there. Then we have a certain area on the side of the house that we take her to as well. Chat Icon

We have a fenced area I am trying to get them only to go there. They do it most of the time.

I also have a service that comes and picks up every week too.

Chat Icon My parents' neighbors do this, and don't clean it up, b/c it is not in a part of the yard they use I guess (and far from the house), but it borders the only shady part of my parents yard, which they haven't been able to use for years because of the smell. So if you do this, please be considerate of your neighbors.

That is really disgusting. Not cleaning up your dog's poop asap is a sure way to infect all of your dirt/soil with roundworm and other types of pet parasites.Chat Icon Not to mention how unfair to your neighbors for sure.

I trained my dog to go in the flower bed at the back of my old house ( 6 years ago) now at our new house and everyone elses yard he yard he poops in the flower beds not i the grass. When he was a puppy we would take him out on a leash and bring him to his "spot" and give him treats and say "spot" and thing like good boy you went in your spot!!!
