Confused about my NT results
Hey Ladies,
I just got the results from my NT scan and the doctor said that they results came back with a 1 in 200 result for downs. My doctor said it really wasn't bad and the odds are still in my favor. At my 16 week appointment (Which is in 2 weeks) he is doing a AFP test (I am not sure what that is exactly) and then from there I can decide if I want an amnio...
I am just a little confused if I should have an amnio or not.... are those odds really that bad? I know I was expecting something different....
Also, is this an accurate test? I think so right?
Lastly, I was driving whent he doctor called and didn't write anything down and everything kind of happened quickly. Do I need to know the measurements of something???
Thanks for helping a confused mom to be!!

Re: Confused about my NT results
Think of it this way: if the odds of a problem are 1 in 200, the odds are 199 in 200 that your baby is fine. That's 99.5% odds. That's what your OB means by the odds being in your favor; they overwhelmingly are.
However, "abnormal" results are considered anything more likely than 1 in 1000. That's why the OB is mentioning these extra tests. Not to scare you, but 1 in 200 is higher than the norm and it will make the docs want to be more cautious.
I don't know that knowing the measurements will make you feel any better or worse. In my experience, Googling things has only made me more paranoid and upset. For now, I guess, just take it for what it is: 99.5% odds that everything is fine, and see what happens at your 16 week appointment. Good luck!

Re: Confused about my NT results
Thanks for responding. I am so confused and don't want to get upset yet. Waiting two weeks for the next test is a killer and then waiting for the results makes it even harder!

Re: Confused about my NT results
My sister had 1 in 14 results from her NT and she had the CVS test done and all is fine. I have heard of so many people having not great NT results and then the Amnio and/or CVS is fine.
I opted not to do the NT at all because it just gives you odds where a Amnio/CVS will give you a definitive result.
GOOD LUCK and 1 in 200 is def not the worst I saw.
