PCOS question
Perhaps this has been asked before (and perhaps I am just too lazy to do a search )
When I went to the OB yesterday and made her order tests for PCOS (GRRRRRR....), I asked her what would I have to do differently in regards to TTC if I DO have PCOS. The only thing she said (and she said it quite a few times) was Lose weight. Is that true? I understand that I am overweight. Mind you not EXTREMELY overweight. The only things she said is that if I lose 20 pounds my cycle will most likely regulate itself. I don't know...for some reason that doesn't sound right. Of course, I haven't done that much research on it, maybe she is correct. She was pretty unhelpful in general...probably because she doesn't believe that I have PCOS and she was only doing the tests because I was asking for it, since I am on CD61 and no AF yet.
Just frustrated and trying to figure out what's going on.

Re: PCOS question
In many cases, PCOS can be mitigated by losing weight (if you are overweight). A week ago someone posted on here about how they had PCOS and lost a lot of weight and now her cycles are more regular.
My only advice to you is that if you are diagnosed with PCOS, not to continue with an ob, go to an RE. Im hope that's not the case for you though

Re: PCOS question
Thanks. I guess I know I need to lose weight, but I am lazy right now, and part of me doesn't want to believe that in order to be regular all I have to do it lose weight and that the reason I am having a hard time getting pregnant is that I am fat.

Re: PCOS question
I'm at a normal weight with a healthy BMI and my cycles are still irregular. If I lost any weight I'd be underweight and probably would never get my period!

Re: PCOS question
PCOS affects everyone differently. My best friend lost weight (maybe 10-15lbs) and got pregnant. while my coworker who also has PCOS has always been thin w/ no "symptoms" of PCOS and it took her much longer to get pregnant.
you're first step is to see if you have PCOS or not! if you dont like what your ob/gyn is telling you then you should see a RE.
good luck!!

Re: PCOS question
Just one more thing, I'd like to know what your OB would say about how I can regulate my cycles, since I am not overweight. There are other treatments for PCOS, usually the first line is Metformin which helps regulate blood sugar issues (I think), which can also help people lose weight.

Re: PCOS question
I think it's time for an RE.
There's a lot more to PCOS than just weight alone. Losing weight COULD help... but it's def not THE SOLUTION.

Re: PCOS question
I agree with the pp.. I think you should see a RE. I have PCOS.. I am overweight.. I lost a large amount of weight and my cycles never regulated. I also think that there are many normal weight or underweight women who have PCOS and everyone has different issues with it.

Re: PCOS question
Thanks everyone. If it turns out that I DO have PCOS I will definitely seek the help of an RE because I am SURE there are others things I can do besides (and along with) losing weight. I KNEW that didn't sound right

Re: PCOS question
I am so happy you pushed for the blood work. I'm sorry you have PCOS, but at least now you know. You know your body better than any doctor!

Although I'm sorry you have PCOS I'm so glad you pushed and now you have an answer. I'm working with a RE and although the process is different- they are very supportive and knowledgable. There are plenty of other options in addition to losing weight to help the process along.

Opps...I am sorry...miscommunication. I don't know if I have PCOS. I was just saying that IF I do have it.

Re: PCOS question
Yup pretty much ditto to what everyone said... loosing weight isnt the only thing to help mitigate PCOS. For some its very important.
There are wonderful resources out there - forums just like LIF! Good Luck
