Re: OK Christians & Catholics...How does this work?

They were "supposed" to have received all their sacraments, but my church never even checked.

Re: OK Christians & Catholics...How does this work?

it really depends on the church. My sister couldn't make me godparents of her children bc I was never baptized or anything. However, other churches are not as strict.

I learned the following in my Baptism class at the church just last week...

Technically, a child only needs ONE Godparent. ONE of the Godparents has to have had all three sacraments. The other can't be listed on the Baptismal certificate as a Godparent, but can stand at the Baptismal font the day of the Baptism as a "witness". Of course, you can still consider them the "Godparents"... it's just not officially that way on the documentation.

Now, you can also have more than TWO Godparents! The Deacon told us that some cultures have multiple sets of Godparents for one baby... but, again, only one Godfather and one Godmother are officially listed on the Baptismal certificate.

So, you can pick someone who has had all three sacraments AND the two who haven't and all THREE of them can be Godparents... but just the "3 Sacramenter" will be officially listed.

Otherwise, I guess you can look into a crash course in getting the three sacraments performed for one of your original choices.

Good luck! Chat Icon

My church is super strict and not only do both g-parents have to have made their sacraments, but if they are married they had to have been married in the church. Which just eliminated every male we had for consideration. So it depends on the church.

The rules seem to be different for each church. I would contact your church and ask about their requirements.

I agree. My Church (Catholic) is very strict about them having all their sacraments AND being practicing Catholics who go to Mass weekly. Not that they asked for proof but I'm also the type that wouldn't lie about those things, lol.Chat Icon

I agree. Two nieces had different 'rules' for me to be their sponsors.

I agree...every church seems to have their own set of rules for this. Mine didn't ask for any proof but I know my friend's church asked for both godparents to provide records. Both are Roman Catholic churches.

technically, the rules are NOT different for each church, it's more of how each parish goes about handling the process.

technically, BOTH godparents are supposed to be catholics in good standing with all sacraments received. that said, however, not all parishes ask for documentation of this (i.e. the godparents' baptismal certificate (which lists all your sacrments received on the back) or a letter from your current pastor sent to the parish where the child will be baptized as proof).

i am a godparent for my friend's child and i was asked for a letter from my parish stating i was a catholic in good standing. yet my parish, when i asked what documetnation was needed for the godparents for my baby, the priest just answered, " i am trusting that parents are choosing Catholics that have received all their Sacraments."

so basically, yes, the godparents are supposed to be catholics that have received baptism, communion and confirmation (optional sacraments such as marriage and holy orders are not required of a godparent). some parishes will check and some will not.

Agree. DS godparents didn't need to show proof of anything but one of the two HAD to come to the baptism class with DH and I.

For my Goddaughter's Christening, I didn't do anything.

ETA DS godparents are Catholic (my sister) and Lutheran.

It really depends on the church. Some are more strict with that then others. Call the church you are planning to ave your baby baptized in and ask.

Re: OK Christians & Catholics...How does this work?

Coincidentally, I just got off the phone with my church about it. The rules there are one Godparent must have made all sacrements in the Catholic church and be in good standing. The other Godparent does not have to meet those requirements but must have been baptized in a Christian church.

So check with your parish.
