My grass and an animal

Something is 'pooping' on my grass outside. I cant imagine it is a cat bc it looks to big, I do not see any stary dogs ever. I am thinking a racoon.Chat Icon

What can I do to deter this. I have a active 2 y/o and her toys, swings etc are on the grass and now I refuse to have her play out there.

TIA

Its prob a racoon. We have them. That will never stop us from being outside. Think about the birds who poop on the swings, or frogs that hop on things. They are night time animals. I wouldnt worry to much about it, unless of course younsee him during the day,

We have feral cats in our area that do dog sized poops on our front lawn. It is horrible, and we can't get rid of them because the crazy people who live behind us feed them. It could very well be a cat Chat Icon

ok this is what I wanted to know, is it dangerous? I have to obviously clean the poop up before letting DD play out there, but still would it be dangerous even after its cleaned up? We have a beautiful yard and DD loves to be outside.

Interesting, would a cat go on grass though? I thought only dirt? This is smack in the middle of my lawn.

If you pick it up it should be fine, think of all the urine on thenlawn from whatever creatures are out there.

Re: My grass and an animal

Is it repeated pooping? In the same area? If so, probably raccoon. They like to make an area to crap in...that they like to go back to. A raccoon poop is usually dark brown...very dark. Larger than cat feces but smaller than a large dog. On a side note, make sure not to leave any garbage they can access or food around...hopefully the raccoon will leave and go poop somewhere else.

If it IS raccoon feces....you must be VERY VERY careful. Raccoon feces can contain raccoon roundworm, which is EXTREMELY dangerous to humans.

I would pick it up with at least 2 pairs of gloves on, WITH a bag turned inside out, carefully and put it into it's own bag and dispose of it. I would also pour boiling water on that patch of grass. It will kill the grass but you don't want remnants of raccoon dropping there and the only way to kill raccoon roundworm is boiling water. In my old house...we saw alot of raccoons and I found poop in my yard that I knew was not cat (and no stray dogs around).

Myy DD was only a few mths old and I freaked after seeing the story on the news about raccoon roundworm. So that's why I read so much about it. NEVER let it sit or disintegrate b/c it will get into the dirt and soil....and roundworm can live in the soil. And the roundworm can ONLY develop after being in the soil for about 10 days, so picking it up asap is the best way to keep your soil clean.

If they are pooping in the same spot, I would find a way to discourage use of that area but raccoons also like to poop on elevated surfaces I have read so keep an eye out.

Thanks! I had a feeling this wasnt good. When I noticed it today I brought her in ASAP, and I am sure she didnt go near the area at all. She is afraid of ALL bugs and she saw a spider on the fence and refused to step foot on the grass pretty muchChat Icon

I cant say it is repeated droppings bc this is the first time. Last week we were out there in the kiddie pool and I smelled something and checked out the yard all week and couldnt find anything. But it was driving me nuts.

We are sooo careful with our garbage bc of the Raccoon issue so it is def not coming from that. we have one of those huge garbage "houses" so the cans are kept in there and they are closed etc. and they are kept on the side of the house not anywhere near where i found the droppings.

UGH.. one more thing to worry about now.
