Could Bed Rest be temporary?
I've been experiencing a lot of pressure "down below" and have gone to my perinatologist. Last week, they saw I was having contractions. Yesterday, there were no contractions, but they're not crazy about the length of my cervix. It's getting shorter, but still not in that dangerous range. I came home early from work today because I just kept getting sharp, shooting pains and pressure in the vaginal area, so I decided to just put my feet up for the rest of the day and drink water to see if anything improves. I'm holding off on going back to the doctor because I was just there yesterday. They told me to take it easy, no working out, to come back Monday to see how things look and to call if I experience really bad pains.
My concern is that they are going to put me on "bed rest". What does that mean exactly? I'm only in my 23rd week... does that necessarily mean I would have to be on bed rest until I have the baby? Is there a possibility it would be "temporary"? How does it work with work? I know every job is different, but I'm so worried about not being able to AFFORD bed rest!
TIA!

Re: Could Bed Rest be temporary?
It really depends. Because you are so early it's possible for your cervix to lengthen, but I'm not sure if they'd let you off of bedrest - that would be a big risk to take!
I was on bedrest from 31w3d-36w. I'm now off bedrest because if I go into labor, it's no longer a risk. So yes, it could be temporary in that sense - that if you don't go into labor by the end of your pregnancy, they'll let you back on your feet.
Just try to rest and take it easy! If they do put you on bedrest, well, it's no fun but it's what is best for your baby.

Thank you. I'm just so nervous about these sharp vaginal pains that come and go. And I keep reading about early labor or even that terrible m/c word, so I'm scared to death.

Re: Could Bed Rest be temporary?
I had 2 rounds of temporary bedrest before this last time. One at 13 weeks due to shortening cervix that was fine afterward (and was fine until like 30 weeks) and once when I had a placenta previa that bled. Each of those lasted about a week until the issue resolved. Now I have been on modified bedrest since 31 weeks 3days and I don't see any getting off of it until maybe 36 weeks (if I make it that far). Try to too worry about it yet, wait and see how the appt goes Mon!

Thank you! I feel better after reading this!! It just seems unimaginable to go on bed rest from now until delivery, so hopefully it would just be "temporary" bed rest. But, of course, I'll do whatever is needed for the baby.
I'm thinking of taking a day off today to just rest, but I feel guilty because I'm really trying to save my days, but those pains yesterday scared me into wanting to see the doc today.

Re: Could Bed Rest be temporary?
what does bed rest consist of? like are you really supposed to lay in bed all day and can't leave the house? sorry if it's a silly question, i'm just curious!

Re: Could Bed Rest be temporary?
With my first pregnancy I was on a very early bedrest. I had to get a cerclage at 9 weeks and was actually put on bedrest for 5 weeks after that. That was daunting, I thought I was on bedrest from 9 weeks through the entire pregnancy! They saw that my cervix lengthened and that everything stabilized, so I stayed off bedrest for the duration.
Good luck

Depends. Modified bed rest, you can usually get up to eat dinner, stuff like that. Full bed rest, nope, you can't even leave the house. I would get up in the morning, take a quick (I mean quick) shower, lay on the couch and be there for the duration until I went to bed, only get up to go to the bathroom or get something to eat. You can only be inclined a certain amount, too. Its not fun, but sometimes necessary. It would definitely be IMPOSSIBLE for me if it were to happen now, have a LO at home. I can't even imagine!
