Toenail Fungus?
Ugh- I can't get rid of this. My big toe looks HORRENDOUS. Thick, yellow, mishappen.
Anyone ever have a toenail fungus? What did you do for it? Prescription pill, cream, polish?
Did it work?
This thing looks HOPELESS. I haven't been able to get a pedi in over a year...it was always one thing or another with this toe.
HELP!!!

Re: Toenail Fungus?
I had it years ago and left it alone bc I was embarrassed, then I finally went tothe foot dr and she gave me the Lamisil pill. It worked, took a couple of month for a fresh nail to grow in. But if you don't want to take a pill I've heard using plain old Vasoline on it might work. It takes a while for it to work but I've heard it works.

Ditto. did the same. Just recently actually. Took Lamisil.
If its been like that for a yr, a topical wont fix it.

Re: Toenail Fungus?
I had it years ago and I'm pretty sure the podiatrist had the pharmacy make a topical solution out of lamisil. I polished it on twice a day or something like that. You do have to wait for it to grow out tho which is sucky. I don't get pedicures during the winter now just to give my toenails a break from the bacteria laden salons! That's most likely where i got it originally.

Re: Toenail Fungus?
It hasn't been fungused for a year...it started out that I lost the toenail due to an injury and when a new one FINALLY grew in, it was ok for a bit then it seemed to have gotten a fungus. It's been a few months and I just don't think it's going to go away on it's own.
I am curious about the Lamisil- did they warn you it's hard on the liver or anything? I have heard you have to have blood tests etc to make sure it's not damaging your liver? That worries me a bit....

What Deb said.
I worked for a podiatrist when I was younger and you wouldn't believe the number of women that came in from toenail fungus that they got from nail salons! and I worked in a pretty elite area too.. lamisil is what he always gave them..

Re: Toenail Fungus?
I took it so long ago I don't even remember, they prob did. And I had gotten the fungus before I even knew what the inside of a nail salon looked like. I never liked anyone touching my feet. I think I may have gotten it bc I used to cut my nails so short and cut the corners too. I think that may be where it came from. I also responded well to it. It does take a while for the nail to grow out and a new one to grow in. I used to keep dark nail polish on my toes all the time just to hide it.

I wasn't implying that ALL fungus is from a nail salon.. I should have clarified.. you can get fungus just because your feet are in shoes/socks/darkness.. they aren't breathing.. that breeds the fungus..
it's also highly contagious too just so you know.. so someone could develop it on their own, go to a salon to get a pedi and the nail salon may not be the most clean place and voila! now they are passing it along to others who get their nails done and the same fungusy tools were used on them

I also heard those whirlpool baths they soak your feet in are teh WORST They can clean the tub all they want, but fungus can live in the jets and they can't clean those properly. ALso, I read that the fact taht I lost my nail, made me more suseptible to it. They say the new nail is not as strong and it's much easier to get a fungus under it. Either way I am in toenail he11 !

Re: Toenail Fungus?
I got a pedi last year from a new place that opened so I figured it was clean. Ever since then my right toe got irritated and it turned purple. It would come and go...I recently cut my own nail a little too deep and it happened again, it got so swollen purple and red and nasty stuff was oozing out...I was putting bacatarin and peroxide every day and it heeled in 2 weeks. I know this doesn't answer your question but my toe doesnt seem to be 100% ever sicne I got that pedicure.

Re: Toenail Fungus?
DH has it. All those remedies that you mentioned didnt work for dh. He didnt want to take the pills, because you have to get bloodwork done every few months. He is thinking of doing the laser.

I Heard about the laser. I don't think insurance covers it and I hear it's pricey.
But if it works....

Are you a podiatrist? I work near Commack. Tell me more! Do the creams work? I really want to avoid the pills- the liver damage warnings are scary to me... (I'm sure I have done enough damage to my liver with the booze over the years!)

My dad is getting the laser. It's not covered by insurance, and the treatments (I think it's a total of 3 sessions, spaced out) cost $800.

Hi, Please try tea tree oil. Apply every am and pm to the top and underneath of nail with a clean q-tip for each dip. Also keep the nail trimmed very short. I had tried everything and that finally worked...all gone! Good luck

Re: Toenail Fungus?
I had mine removed by a podiatrist back in October--it was falling off as well as fungused. I had to put a topical on the skin while it grew in. Wouldn't you know it but it grew back fungused again.
so now I'm on lamisil and have little actual toenail. The little I have is disgusting and separated from the skin.
If your nail separates from the bed, it doesn't always readhere. I may be stuck like this
I'm convinced it's from a pedicure. Although my place cleans the baths, I just know that's where it's from

Thanks I'll give it a whirl. I am willing to try anything but drugs that may cause liver issues scare the cr@p out of me!
