20/20 bullied into breastfeeding
20/20 just started and they are supposed to do a segment on this. Just thought I'd let everyone know. I'm watching, curious what they'll say.

I watched - I totally agree that if the gov't wants me to breastfeed, then they should pay my salary during a maternity leave, longer than 3 months, and make it a law that employers have to accommodate nursing moms

They shouldn't be spending all this money on promoting breastfeeding. No ones going to argue that breastmilk isn't best. They should be putting this money in educating on how to breastfeed and support for women who choose to.

I also agree that- a longer paid leave would be very helpful as well!

I missed it
but it sounds pretty close to the NYT article a few weeks ago.
I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I totally agree, and as a bf'ing mom, I would love for the gov't, instead of attacking moms who want to formula feed, to inform this country that a breast isn't a shameful or embarrassing thing to see when a mommy feeds her child! This country is a bunch of tight azzes when it comes to boobs.
I am totally comfortable with myself, but for the comfortableness of everyone around me I am forced into bedrooms, in my car, and to give my child pumped milk or formula in public cause I can't feed her from the tap! I have a mouth, and refuse to sit idle while people stare and make comments if I were to feed her in public and that wouldn't be good for my child.
That's more of problem(seeing nursing moms feed their child) I think than making moms feel bad if they can't or choose not give their child breastmilk.
Rant over

Was anyone else bothered by the ads? The fact that they implied that choosing not to BF is like going mechanical bull riding or log rolling while pg, annoyed me big time.

I agree also. I we would be a more successful BFing nation if new mom's were better educated. I think "bullying" people is only going to make people rebel to prove their point (I hope that makes sense).

Re: 20/20 bullied into breastfeeding
I plan on FF. The reason.. I HAVE to go back to work.. and the option of pumping during class w/ my 4th graders isn't exactly an option.. and I do not work in a school where I would be accomadated (breaks switched or lunch or whatever) I wish I would get more than 6 weeks maternity leave.. but I don't if I want to be able to help support my family.. I know BF is #1.. but I kinda feel as if my hands are tied

those ads were infuriating!!
if the gov't care SO MUCH about our health, then (1) why do they allow the sale of cigarettes, and (2) why do they make health care so hard to get/pay for?

Funny thing is back in the 1960's you were DISCOURAGED from BF-ing and pushed towards formula...who knows what they will say in ten or twenty years...

Re: 20/20 bullied into breastfeeding
Honestly, the ads didn't bother me that much. I actually do think it is a good idea for the gov't to sponsor an awareness campaign, because formula companies spend millions each year marketing their product to mothers -- they market in doctors offices and in hospitals, as well as in baby stores. Since there is such a large body of evidence that breast milk is superior I really think it becomes a public health issue and I'm glad the gov't is putting the word out. That being said, I think the campaign should focus more on changing society's attitudes toward breast feeding. I think the ads would be a lot more effective if they actually showed mothers breast feeding in public and advocated for providing breast feeding mothers with the support they need to be successful.

I wouldn't mind if they didn't tell me that DD would be stupider, less healthy, and have severe allergies because I FF...scare tactics are not a good marketing tool IMO.

I agree
I have been on the fence about BF....and really want to, but I have to go back to work and pumping in a school setting will not do

Re: 20/20 bullied into breastfeeding
Having twins you will probably produce a lot of milk so if you BF and pump and store milk while you are at home you might be able to get a couple of months worth of BM for when you go back to teaching and then when that runs out you can make the switch. My friend who had twins and exclusively pumped was able to pump a gallon of milk a day ! Good Luck whatever you decide.

Re: 20/20 bullied into breastfeeding
Diane, my friend had twins (early granted) and teh DR's did not give her a choice. He said you HAVE to pump. Your babies need the colostrum more than any other babies. Also something interesting I found out that if you have a baby at 29 weeks as she did, your colostrum is a totally different makeup than if you go to 38 weeks. It provides exactly what your baby needs for their birth week. Does that make sense? Thought it was interesting. I, when I get PG again, want to BF as long as I can and luckily I have a job where i could pump if I had to. I can't see myself doing it for longer than 6 mos. I have heard 6 weeks is better than nothing
