WWYD? Chicken expiration question
I buy a roaster chicken ever other week and was planning on making the sticky roaster tonight. I pulled out the roaster and it is expired 2 days already. I just bought it late friday afternoon, they usually have a week before they expire and i bought a bigger one this time so it was more expensive. I know i should have looked at the expiration but normally there is always a week from when i buy it before it expires, Hannaford has really been slacking lately in the food quality lately.
Would you still use it? The date was Jan.31....
Would you call the grocery store and say something about the short expiration?

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
I personally wouldn't use it- but I'm a stickler for expiration dates. I probably waste alot of food because I follow them religiously.
I hate when certain foods have short expiration dates. I find that all the time with knishes. Sometimes they all expire in 2-3 days. Once they even had knishes on the shelves PAST the expiration date. I don't bother saying anything. You could call the supermarket but I doubt that would do anything.

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
I wouldn't use it unless you put it in the freezer first and are now going to put it in the refrigerator. I would not call to complain. I feel like in this case the onus was on you to inspect the expiration date. It's not like they sold you a chicken that expired the day you purchased it, in which case, yes I would call. The chicken still had a few days after you purchased it. I know it absolutely stinks to loose out like that, its happened to me before too, and I am sorry.

I wouldn't use it. I'm a little wacky about stuff like that.
I wouldn't call the store either.

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
I once used chicken that was a day or two past its expiration date and it was fine. I couldn't afford not to use it.
If it looks or smells funny when you take it out of the packaging then don't use it. But it might be OK.
Lately, Waldbaums does that all the time!! Everytime I go to buy chicken, I look at the date and it is for that night or the night after!! I shop for a whole week so what use is that to me?? Unless I freeze it that night and sometimes I hate doing that.

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
If it was in the freezer then I'd definitely still use it. The fridge is a little more iffy.

Does is smell bad? If not use it. Or return it to the store. I'm sure they'll exchange it.

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
Is it the SELL BY date or an expiration date? I think I'd smell it and if it wasn't funky, still use it.

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
if it smells good but you are concerned, wash it with some lemon juice. the acid will clean it nice.
but expiration dates are for the store more than they are for you. you usually have a few days leeway after the date noted.
ETA: really? I LOVE Hannaford!

Re: WWYD? Chicken expiration question
the date on the package is usually a sell by date, so you have at least a day or so after before i'd be worried about it.
if you open it and smell it, and it smells fine, then you should be ok.
I wouldn't say anything to the store, its not their fault that you didn't notice the expiration date
