DH makes slightly over 100K and we still could not afford for me to stay home FT. We just could not make ends meet with the mortgage, taxes, home equity loan payments for home improvements, two cars, and bills. Sure we could cut back on regular spending, but the big bills just kill us. So I will be going back to work after 6 months of maternity leave. But I'm ok with that .
I am in exactly the same situation, but during the time i am on maternity i will have only have my income to count on so cutting back has to occur in order to survive.

I doubt it 
I stay at home, and DH makes less than that. I think the difference with us is that we have no debt. Everything we have we own free and clear. Also, when we move out of state I definitely won't have to work, since DH's salary is more than enough somewhere else.

Very, very true. If my dh made what we made combined, I could stay home, even with debt because I would not have the daycare and after-care, holiday & summer camp expenses.

I think it all depends on your lifestyle. I have friends who are SAHMs and they have to sacrafice a lot. I could not sacrafice our lifestyle for me to stay home (especially being that I am the one who make the $$ and DHs money is basically our spending money). When we have our baby, we have someone to watch our child, so we don't have to pay high day care prices. But, if day care was just as much as DH makes, he would be a SAHD.

It all depends really. DH is self employeed so what he "makes" isn't what he "makes" because we have a TON of deductions He makes enough for me to stay home with the kids and we still have food on the table every night. God I love my DH
My husband is self-employed too. But we depend on my job for health insurance. How are you dealing with the health insurance issue with two kids?

mine DH makes well over $100K- but I will probably go back to work unless we move out of state
he makes comission- so it's not a steady amount of money- and I make decent money myself- but in Salary - so that helps get us thru a bad month

My husband is self-employed too. But we depend on my job for health insurance. How are you dealing with the health insurance issue with two kids?
We pay $996/ month for freakin health insurance  but its a write off...

DH is in the 80-100K but I also work PT now and make about 40K. We also live in CO which isn't cheap but isn't as expensive as NY
Same for me but we live on LI. I also work three days per week to make the PT $$$.

I can't imagine owning a home on 20-40K salary, no way!!! Unless you got a lot of help from parents or something.
But your choice of house can definitely make or break whether you'll be a SAHM. DH and I have friends who make almost exactly the same salaries as us. Their mortgage is almost double what ours is though. So I stay home now, but our friend has to go back to her job, technically to "pay the bills". But we're not talking about just putting food on the table here. Yes she is working to pay the mortgage bill, but the bill didn't need to be that high.....

We made $35,000 total COMBINED when we bought our house BUT it was 10 yrs. ago from my parents. They didn't give us a deal but we did put alot down.

My bf stays at home with 3 kids. I remember a few years ago her DH was only making 40K. He works for a small company so I doubt it has gone up drastically and they are homeowners. Bought their 1st house in 1995 and just upgraded to a 4BR colonial. They don't live in the greastest neighboorhood on LI and not the worst either. They do well, own a nice truck, camper and do things as a family. So I think it is possible to do it if you are willing to make sacrifices.

I'm a SAHM and my Dh doesn't make 100,000. I'd say he's a tad bit lower. I haven't really changed my lifestyle, but then again I rarely go shopping for myself anymore.

the poll didn't say SAHM in NY....we're in GA and own a home, a brand new Chevy Tahoe and have 2 dogs and a brand new baby all for under $50K, maybe under $40K a year. I am quite honestly, very PROUD of this. We knew that NY was not where we wanted to be, nor raise our kids so we left. So what if I buy stuff 2nd hand or we don't have name brand stuff....we're happy with our little life and that's all that matters, right?

Yep absolutely. I just assumed this being a LI board that we got all LI answers We will eventually sell our LI home and move out of state as well..........
