Re: SAHM's-How much does dh make??
Well so far, I really see a trend on how women stay home. It looks like alot are making over $100,000!! We are not even making that combined-lol!!
People say that "everyone" can stay home if they cut back. Are these the people whose dh's make over $100,000 because then they don't have a clue when someone else has to work because their dh does not make even half that!!

Re: SAHM's-How much does dh make??
It all depends really. DH is self employeed so what he "makes" isn't what he "makes" because we have a TON of deductions He makes enough for me to stay home with the kids and we still have food on the table every night. God I love my DH

I would assume that to live on LI and be a SAHM, your DH would HAVE to be earning above $100k...is it really possible with less than that?

Re: SAHM's-How much does dh make??
DH does very well for us, but im also a "low maintenance" kinda wife
I cut grocery bills into quarters (oh we've had our coupon posts, dont get me started!) The other day I got 2 cans of formula, a book of stamps, 3 boxes of cake mix, 2 frostings, 6 corn muffin mixes, all for $12. Strategies with coupons and sales, I think is a part time job in itself... plus my subbing part time is good for little extras. I buy clothes on sale (brand names at probably less than the store paid). and Im just not a big spender. I splurge here and there, but Im realistic about my spending.

Re: SAHM's-How much does dh make??
My dh does make over $100 grand a year. I don't think I would've been able to be a SAHM for these past 4 years if he didn't. We have a nice house that we are constantly doing SOMETHING in, the taxes are nuts, my school-aged son goes to a Catholic school, we have a new car, we don't really deny ourselves too much. My dh works soooooooo hard and is constantly looking to better his finances. (He went on an interview today..."just to see what else is out there".) I am so grateful to him and for everything he has provided for us.
edited to say-
But we still spend within our means also. We cut coupons (my dh is a couponaholic), shop during sales, always look to save a buck! Who doesn't like to save $$$??

We live off my salary b/c DH is in real estate and not currently working and it's below 100k. But we do get rental income that helps supplement. And we live on LI.

Re: SAHM's-How much does dh make??
DH does make over $100K, but like another poster said, I'm pretty low-maintenance. I shop sales, look for coupons, not demanding to remodel our kitchen when we really can make do with what we have, etc.
But I agree with everyone-- I think it's hard to be able to SAH without DH making at least $100K. The mortgage and taxes alone...
I gave up an over $100K job to stay home with DS. The #1 biggest reason we could make this happen was that we always always lived month to month just on DH's paycheck. My paycheck went straight into savings or for "big" things like the downpayment on our current house. If it's at ALL possible I totally recommend doing this. That way when the baby comes, you don't suddenly have to dial back your entire lifestyle.

I've read this too on other financial boards. This is such garbage. These people who say this must live somewhere other than LI!!!!

YES and they have no life. They mostly have 1 car and go nowhere and do nothing. They don't buy clothes for themselves and shop thrift shops and garage sales for clothes for their kids. They grow their own food, etc. You get the point. That is just NOT the life for me so I live here and work FT-lol!!!

I'm sorry i don't understand the point. I do think if you cut back you can manage on one income. I have plenty of friends who are SAHM with dh's making less than 100k and live in Suffolk with 2 cars and 2 kids in school. They haven't given up much but going out without the kids.

Yes, mostly because they don't have kids in daycare and their dh's probably have medical and great benefits. If my dh made what we both did, under $100,000 and had benefits, THEN I would be able to stay home. He did not go to college and get a degree so he is SLOWLY moving up the pay scale. He is currently making the most he ever has and I am VERY proud of him. NO, I will never be able to stay home but my last child will be in school in 2 years so I am not worried about that anymore. We are doing the best we can right now and always have.

Re: SAHM's-How much does dh make??
DH makes slightly over 100K and we still could not afford for me to stay home FT. We just could not make ends meet with the mortgage, taxes, home equity loan payments for home improvements, two cars, and bills. Sure we could cut back on regular spending, but the big bills just kill us. So I will be going back to work after 6 months of maternity leave. But I'm ok with that ( I say that now- I haven't even had the baby yet!!). I'm a teacher so you can't beat the vacation time and my salary makes it worth it. I will continue supervising after school activities for the additional income (not much, but every little bit helps) so we can go away for a week next summer.
I guess everyone just has really different expenses.
