Price of labor with insurance

How much (if any) will labor cost you even with health insurance? Is it a stupid idea to call up the hospital and ask them how much it would cost to delivery a baby with my type of health insurance?

Re: Price of labor with insurance

I would call the insurance company and ask, rather than the hospital.

I'm sure a lot is involved as far as how many nights you stay.. if its vaginal birth or c-section, etc.

Re: Price of labor with insurance

You should call your ob/gyn office. My first visit there, they told us what it will cost us. They can basically tell you, and they will have your insurance info on file.

You can also go online. My ins has a treatment cost caluculator to give you an idea of how much procedures are (including giving birth). Just register your account on your ins co website

Yea, this is what I thought but I thought it would be a stupid question to ask. Chat Icon

Yea, I actually did this and it gave me a rough idea. I just wondered if calling the Dr. office directly would be more accurate.

Re: Price of labor with insurance

I wanted to add - alot of insurance plans tell you they'll pay a percentage (mine is 90%).
When I had DS (and I hate saying that all the time, but I figure it can be helpful to have a BTDT perspective), my insurance plan was different than I have now. According to my EOB, my delivery cost just shy of $30,000. That was 3 days in L&D complete with 2 rounds of cervadil and pitocin (serial induction), epidural, delivery, 2 nights in maternity... the works...
With my old insurance, I paid NOTHING. Not even a co-pay or deductible.
With my current insurance, that would be about $3,000.

Not all deliveries cost this much. I talked to a g/fs of mine at work who had different types of delivery (vag labor and birth w/o meds and c-section) and they were less. You should find out from your ins. co as the previous posters suggested what your coverage is so you have a general idea. Chat Icon

Re: Price of labor with insurance

Cost of my c section was $27,000. I only paid $100 as a copay and an extra $1000 because I wanted a private room.

My DC's stay was $7000. I only paid $100 as a copay as well.

I had a c-section and I think it was somewhere in the $25k-$30k price. DD hospital stay was about $6000. I owed the hospital a total of $600 ($300 for each of us).

Re: Price of labor with insurance

With insurance we had to pay $2,500 which then met my deductible so all visit thereafter were 100% covered.

ETA: My c-section cost $12,500. I am so jeaous off ll you ladies that only paid $500-$1000...we are still paying payments to the hospital a year later and our deductible has been raised to $3,000

We had to pay a $500 hospital co-pay with Oxford and that was it. Everything else was 100% covered which is GREAT news since my C-section cost nearly $20K. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Price of labor with insurance

I actually called my insurance with this question the other day. As the earlier posters said it totally depends on your plan. I had a 25$ co-pay for my first doctors visit and than thats it. If I deliver at a hospital besides for Winthrop (my husband works there) than I'll have to pay 300$ dollars to the hospital. It's a good thing we live across the street from the hospital. I was shocked that they covered so much so I would definitely call or ask your OB.

Re: Price of labor with insurance

Your Ob's office should be able to tell you. I think I had a $250 hospital deductible and $100 Co-pay. The bill was about 15k and I paid $350.
