LI Maternity Wards
Does anyone have a rank of LI hospitals? I would like to see where some of them fall.

Re: LI Maternity Wards
I couldn't find a ranking, but I found a document that gave Excellence Awards for maternity wards nationwide. The local hospitals were (in ABC order): Bronx Lebanon Flushing Hospital Forest Hills Hospital Lenox Hill (Manhattan) NY Hospital, Medical Center of Queens NYU Downtown Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center (Bronx) NSLIJ- Plainview Southampton Hospital (this is where I'll be delivering) NSLIJ- Southside (Bay Shore) St. Charles (Port Jeff) SVCMC- St. Vincents (Staten Island) Winthrop (Mineola)

my sister delivered all her DC at St. Charles...beautiful hospital, but they are very strict on visiting hours and the babies always stay in the nursery during visiting hours. My SIL just delivered at Huntington Hosp and the nurses there were fabulous and let me walk into the nursery and wheel out my niece.

I know - I had DS there... to be honest though, I didn't mind (and actually welcomed) the strict visiting hours. The baby is in the nursery during the later "general" visit - but he/she can be in the room for the 2hr grandparents visit earlier in the afternoon. I think this is a good idea because it cuts down on the germs the baby is exposed to. It also gave me an excuse to get out of my room and walk around a little bit when I needed to walk down the hall to the nursery to see him with my friends.

I delivered at St. Charles and LOVED it!! It was beautiful, clean, everyone was nice, and the food was great. I was so happy with my experience there. People who have to visit complain about the visiting hours but as a new mom I was THRILLED with them. It was plenty. General visiting was from 7 to 8pm and the baby stays in the nursery (which I was VERY happy about......I didn't want a NB being passed around all day) and then grandparent/sibling visiting hours were from 2 to 4pm and the baby was allowed in the room to visit. It was really perfect, I really wouldn't have wanted more visiting hours. I needed the downtime to recover.

Re: LI Maternity Wards
I just want to add, I found this as a document that was a report of who had received this award. They looked at a number of safety things, but this is not the be all and end all, nor do we know the validity, so take it with a grain of salt. For example, I know Southampton, which was on the list, has an amazing maternity ward with all private rooms, midwives, a water birthing center, etc, but if god forbid something were too go wrong, I would have to deliver at Stony Brook, which is not on the list, but obviously well equipped for serious cases. This is just an example, but I don't want people to freak if their hospital isn't on this list. I would deliver at Southampton regardless b/c every other hospital is at least an hour away from me.
ETA: St. Catherine's in Smithtown just recently received the award as well.

The strict hours were the best part!! Germs weren't all over the baby, and it gave me time to get up and walk down with everyone to see the baby.
St. Charles was awesome to us, i've had both kids there.

my cousin is a nurse at southside's maternity ward. the hospital used to have a reputation for being kind of gross, but the maternity ward is brand new since NS-LIJ took the place over. it's completely locked up from outsiders, and they are really flexible about your visitors and time with your newborn whereas other places are jerks about both. my friends who have delivered there have all had glowing remarks. i think that's where we're hoping to end up...with some baby dust of course

I delivered both DC there (Southside) & LOVED it. The nurses were fabulous & totally took care of you. The nursery was wonderful & they were very accommodating w/ visiting hours. And yes; it was totally redone; they have many private rooms & I was sad to leave

i was born there and it would be nice to deliver there as well. my OB is affiliated, so i'm pretty sure i will be delivering there as well!
