Question for those familiar with Pearl River...

What's with all the panelling???

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm only kinda half-kidding.... There must've been a crazy sale or something...

And, of course, if you have any other thoughts on the area I'd love to hear 'em... DH and I are starting our search, I'm giving it a year to find something we like... Chat Icon

It's not on the island. It's in Rockland County.

My uncle lives there. But we haven't visited him in years. So I don't recall the paneling.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Question for those familiar with Pearl River...

I live there - FM if any questions!

I agree - there is a lot of panelling!

It's a great place to live - it's quaint and very family oriented. The taxes are reasonable for the area and the schools are great.

It reminds me of the neighborhood on LI I grew up in - where the kids are always outside playing.

ETA - It's close to the Palisades and the Thruway - it's so easy to get places (as opposed to how it was leaving from Huntington where I grew up).

There's a cute little downtown with stores and restaurants - lots of bars, it's a very irish community.

Rand Realty has a great website to look at houses...

Click Me

And it's close to NJ for cheap gas.

Colette!!! I didn't know you were looking in Pearl River, first DH and I both grew up in Rockland, his dad lives in Pearl River now along with many of my friends AND, the best part is, my town in Jersey is literally 10 minutes away. I smell some shane gtgs in our future! Chat Icon Seriously though, any questions, please ask, I know alot about the area, which parts you might like above others.

Lots of fellow irishmen there so your DH should feel quite at home there. Chat Icon

Re: Question for those familiar with Pearl River...

I grew up in Rockland County and am now back here again Chat Icon I;m from New City, but I know Pearl River very well. Its a GREAT town. The school district is fantastic, the town is very quaint, its not even 5 minutes from the NJ border, neighbors Nanuet for lots of shopping, great little downtown area with a few great bars and restaurants. Its very Irish - I dont know if that matters to you one way or the other, but in Rockland, Pearl River is known to have a high Irish population. The town just has an all-around small town, homey feel to it. I've been looking at real estate there too. If I can afford it, its very high up on my list of places I'd love to settle down.

DH's cousins live there and love it. Also a very good friend of ours grew up there and still goes 'home' to visit often. Only heard great things about the area.

Re: Question for those familiar with Pearl River...

Thanks so much everyone!!!!

We're at the very very very first little embryonic stage of hunting; DH is off the boat from Ireland (Dublin) so I think the area would suit him. We're both kind of feeling "over" living in Queens, and for the amount of a house here, FORGET it. We want space, grass, treeeeeeeees!!!!

Here's my query though; I keep reading and seeing so much "good stuff" about the area - yet home prices and taxes on a small house (we'd only need a 3bd/2ba really) seem... dare I say it... reasonable??? And it's really less than 1hr commuting into NYC??? I feel like I can't possibly have the whole scoop, call me Cynical Sally Chat Icon !

Re: Question for those familiar with Pearl River...

The prices and the taxes are not too good to be true - they are that reasonable, for the distance to NYC and the quality of schools.

The only downfall about the 3br/2ba homes (we have a cape with 4br/2ba) is the lack of closet space.

Many of the lower priced homes are in need of some renovation - original owners moving into assisted living facilities.

For the commute - the time depends on where you are commuting to in NYC and the times you are commuting. I commute via train every day to downtown NYC via Hoboken. It takes between an hour and 15 to an hour and 45 minutes door to door depending on whether I get the express train or not. There is unfortunately only one express train in each direction since there is only one track. If you are closer to Penn Station, it takes a little less time via train (I know people who commute with me who do that).

There are also busses to Port Authority that take about an hour.

I used to commute from Huntington and this is a lot quicker - but, there aren't as many train options...

I have never lived there, but I one of the reasons I never considered that area, when I was looking in Westcheser is the commute.

I am not punctual enough to deal with infrequent trains! Chat Icon

And it would add another bridge to my trip to my parents house (keep that in mind if you will have to return to Queens frequently.)

The extra bridge part isn't that bad - it's the travel through the Bronx which is a killer!

Re: Question for those familiar with Pearl River...

I am in NJ but about 5 minutes from Pearl River. I do my food shopping there. We absolutely love the town. My husband would love to live there -

I know a few people who live there and they love it as well and are happy with the school system.

If your husband is from Ireland, then this is a great place for him to live !
