Eating at someone's house that isn't careful with raw meat

How do you handle it, when you visit someone (friend or family) who clearly isn't following safety precautions with raw meat? Anyone else notice this when at someone's home?

It's so nerve wracking. I have an aunt who I have caught 3 times now doing very unsafe things re meat and food prep...one day she is going to get one of us really sick.Chat Icon

I usually don't pay attention, but if they are not getting sick, I would assume I won't either.

Like instead of WASHING out a dish that had raw meat in it, just wiping it out to then put cooked food in. Or reusing marinade that had raw meat in it to put on cooked meat, and even worse, offering it to your pregnant guests! The list goes on and on!

Wow, that is pretty bad. Depending on the person I would tell them straight out that those things are very unsafe and someone can get very ill or mention you were recently reading an article that talked about food safety and things that were mentioned were X,Y, & Z

Re: Eating at someone's house that isn't careful with raw meat

Dh and I sort of have food prep issues at my IL's. Nothing as bad as you described, but we still worry about the cleanliness of stuff (or actually, lack thereof).

so DH now sort of hovers around the kitchen/dining area when we are over and they are preparing food, and if he sees something that he doesn't really like going on, he sort of "wanders over" and offers to help, so at least he can control it.

You can always "offer to help" with the meat stuff -- say "you are such a great host, you are always cooking for me, please let me return the favor so you don't have to do this messy work, blah blah blah" and then take it over!

I try to do this...but it's so hard. You don't want to insult someone who is more than 30 years older than you and cooking a long time. But the thing is I worry alot about my DD (19 mths) gettign sick from her cooking.

I don't know if she is just an air head (she is about alot of things) or just ignorant. She is NOT senile, just a little crazy and air heady. But the marinade incident was 2 years ago. She was told then about it having been on the raw meat. Now this year I catch her reusing a wiped out raw meat bowl to put cooked hot dogs in. I found a way to get the bowl and wash it before the hot dogs went in, but it's so hard to have to keep an eye out and even worse, telling someone in their own home how to cook. I regret not telling her how unsafe that was....I just washed it to get it done but I only imagine what she is doing when we aren't around prepping the food, that I CAN'T see. They leave raw meat out for hours and hours in the heat to "marinate". I can list so many other weird things she does that you would think she should have a clue on but she doesn't.

I am so mad at myself for not taking the opportunity to tell her that is so dangerous. But honestly, she was told that about the marinade two years ago and still has done varying things like that since then. I don't think she is going to EVER get it. So do I just not eat or feed my DD her food when there? How do you manage that?

I guess they don't get sick but I would be wary of it as well.

I would bring food for my DC... and claim they're going through a "picky phase" and only will eat certain things.

Re: Eating at someone's house that isn't careful with raw meat

I have serious OCD issues about raw meat. I literally disinfect everything when I cook with it, especially chicken.

My parents know I'm nuts about it so they wash their hands after handling the meat and my mom makes sure to wash everything else down. The same in my aunts house.

To be honest, for the most part I try not to think about it when I am at other people's houses other than family who know I'm nuts Chat Icon I figure if they havent gotten sick yet, then I wont get sick. Than again, everybody's whose house I would eat at knows how I am. I would probably wash the dish myself Chat Icon rude or not.

Re: Eating at someone's house that isn't careful with raw meat

I am always very careful at my own house.

What you described is my worst fear, i wouldn't be able to eat if i knew cooked meat was on a plate that had raw meat on it.

Everyones home i go to practice safe handling of meat and chicken

If it's your own family, can't you just tell them about safe food handling. I bet they would feel awful if you or your family got sick.

I think then at this point you really have to say something. Such as -- I wasn't feeling well the last time I ate ______ here, and I started to do some research and found out all of these things about the handling of meat.... and go into details, seriously.

Get DH involved too. The more people that speak up, the better.
