Prenatal Vitamins

Has anyone had their Gyn tell them not to take Pre - Natal Vitamins?
My doc told me not to bother but I have been getting alot of slack from everyone telling me I should be taking them. What are your thoughts?

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

I actually had my OBGYN and a specialist she sent me to (for having 2 miscarriages) tell me that I can take the pre-natals if I want to but I don't have to....they mentioned that flinstones vitamins are fine too.

I have been taking prenatals since we started TTCing though. it kinda makes me feel better knowing my body is as healthy as can be.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

Is anyone taking or know of a prenatal vitamin that doesn't have Vitamin K in it?

IMO you should try taking them before you are pregnant.

What if you have an allergic reaction to something in them? I would want that to happen when a baby isn't depending on me

A lot of times it takes taking a few different types before you find one that works well for you. Some make you feel nausea which if started durning the first trimester, you won't know if its from the vitamins or because you are PG.

I did a google search and it doesn't seem that there is one without it.

You really should talk to you Dr. I presume they would put you on a multi-vitamin without K and then give you a separate prescription for folic acid.

I really liked the over the counter vitamin I was taking so my Dr suggested doing this for me. I opted for the prescription, so its less pills for me, but I know that was an option

Yes my OBGYN told me to start taking them and make sure I was taking an extra supplement of folic acid....I heard it is good to take it before getting pregnant.

I just got back from the GYN and told her that I'm taking Target's generic prenatals. Everything I've read told me that they're just as good as anything, but she insisted that I take prescription ones, even now when I'm only ttc. I guess every doctor is different. She gave me two free sample bottles of them so hey, why not take them?

There's not a whole lot in them compared to a multivitamin: Vitamins C & E, B6, B12, Folic Acid, DHA, Iron, and calcium. I think that's it.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

When we first started TTC I was taking a Women's One A Day and added on folic acid supplements.

Once I started seeing an RE, I switched to prescription prenatals and have been taking them ever since. Make sure you take DHA too! Chat Icon

My dr said the same thing. She didnt dismiss the idea of the OTC vitamins but she suggested that I take the prescirption ones. I did a label comparison of two of the OTC vitamins and my prescription ones and there was higher mg's of stuff in the prescripton ones plus it has a stool softener.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

My dr said I dont have to take prenatals, just a multi with folic acid until I got PG. When I went for my first appt he gave me a bunch of samples to try and then decide which one I wanted a prescription for. Then I M/C 2.5 months later :(

I have a bottle of CVS brand prenatals I bought when I got a BFP in January because my dr appointment was a few weeks after I tested.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

When I was TTC #1 and throughout the first trimester I was on a multivitamin and folic acid (due to nausea) My OB felt that the prenatals weren't important till the second trimester. Really at this point, while TTC, you just want to build up the folic acid in your body.

I was actually wondering this myself. a friend of mine was told to do this from her GYN and did and now she's pregnant. Wondering if it makes you more fertile or in case you have a bad reaction?

I started taking folic acid. That's it. And only because my midwife told me to do so 3 months before TTC #1.

My GYN didn't explicitly say not to take prenatals. She said that the prenatals can be harsh on the stomach, so while TTC a good multi-vitamin with folic acid is fine. After conceiving she said she'd reco a prenatal vitamin Rx.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

My OB/GYN had me do the One a Day prenatals, and I'm staying on them through the pregnancy. They're seriously the best vitamin I ever took.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

That sounds odd to me. Did they do bloodwork first?

Vitamins aside, you need folic acid before getting pregnant. Just an ex. We aren't even ttc yet, but my Dr. put me on prenatals w/ 1.2 g of folic acid and gave me a script for an extra 1 mg. He did say that otc prenatals were fine until I was preg. and from what I've heard most Drs. want you on one w/ at least 800 mg.

I read something to the effect that up to 70% of neural tube defects would be lessened if women of child bearing years took it regularly.

Can't find that link, but found this.

Folic acid is very important because it can help prevent major birth defects of the baby's brain and spine (anencephaly and spina bifida) by 50% to 70%.
