i do not but i have nothing against them in certain circumstances.
I do not see a locked gun being anymore of asset in a home break in then having no gun. By the time you get the gun out, loaded the person breaking in will probably be next to you. If you leave the gun unlocked perhaps you would have a chance but if you have children and a unlocked gun your an idiot.
My friends hunt so they have guns, they are locked unloaded and only use them for hunting and practice never for "protection." My brother who is a police officer has all his weapons locked and secured because he has children. He has a house alarm to prevent someone from breaking in.
I think in a nutshell your worried about break ins then get a alarm and a good one.

Unless DH decides to join the NYPD - there's no reason for a gun to be in my home.
We pay and obscene amount of taxes to live in a good neighborhood so I don't have to 'worry' about 'needing' a gun ........
Of course, anything can happen at any time - But IMO, the odds of NEEDING that gun are considerably less than the odds of god forbid something awful happening b/c that thing is in my house -

I would think the "good" neighborhoods would be targets for crime no?
We have a rifle-it has never been shot. It is locked away and strictly for protection-really intimidation. I also have 2 large dogs which I feel is a better detterrent than anything

where's other? We have an antique gun that my DH inherited from my grandfather from WWI (he inherited from his uncle). no bullets - so not for protection or hunting. I really don't know what to do with it, but can't get rid of it!
I never want a gun in my house, but DH is a member of the NRA and grew up with a lot of guns for hunting, fun (shooting) and protection (they grew up in a rural area). He has agreed to wait until our kids are 14 to introduce guns

We do not have a gun in our home. I am pretty sure that DH stands to inherit his grandfather's shotgun but its probably not in working condition. I have no idea what HIS plans are, but if chooses to live in the same home as his children, he will leave that shotgun elsewhere.

As I'm sitting here, there is a nice hefty pellet gun right next to me. Looks and feels like the real thing. Have no idea what damage it can inflict.
Personally, I'm not a fan of guns. I'd rather have some big a$$ dogs and an alarm system. Guns don't guarantee protection.

Ditto. I grew up going to the shooting range & our property upstate with my dad for target practice.
Same here.. i was taught at a very young age (maybe 5-7) how to handle and respect guns.... and have carried that through my life. there have always been several different types of guns/weapons kept perfectly safe in my home.
im not in the process of trying to get DW interested in them! i need a shooting partner!

No. I really don't like them.
I grew up in a house with hunting rifles - but I still don't feel comfortable with them in my home so we don't have them!
ETA: The fact that I don't have them or want them does NOT mean that I don't support the right for OTHERS to have them if they treat them with respect.

It can inflict a lot! Take an eye out for sure & kill somebody if they are **** in the face correctly. It is so dangerous.

DH is a police officer so yes... but growing up my father had one that he used for recreation like going to the range. it never really bothered me, i think it was hidden in the closet.

My dad was NYPD so we had guns in the house growing up. I have a very healthy respect for them.
DH and I are discussing getting a shotgun for protection (and yes, we live in a "good" area -- but home invasions happen everywhere). If we do decide to get one, our boys will be taught the same as I was.

We do, but no handguns. JMHO but I feel like its our right and duty to learn how to at least handle a gun. GOD FORBID the circumstances came about and you HAD to use one for your own protection you should at least know you're not going to blow your face off.
Idk- honestly I think as long as you're safe about it and you don't have malicious intent, there's really nothing wrong with it. Most people are afraid because they don't know much about them. I was one of them until I learned. Now I'm much more comfortable being around rifles and firing them.

We do because of DH's job. And we go to the range once a year so I can practice shooting and loading it. It is kept in a safe in our bedroom unloaded...but I actually feel better knowing it's in the house and I was very nervous about it at first. I really think it's more about knowledge than anything. Once I learned how to handle it, I was much more comfortable with it.
BTW, I don't think it would ever be able to save us if someone did get into the house, but the idea of it being there makes me feel "better".

after my previous post... the only thing i have to add is there are legimit reason for having a gun....
i was on a rifle team for a few years... and with proper training and precautions guns are 100% safe.... and by precautions i mean guns are not only locked in a safe but also have trigger locks and the ammo is also locked up in a SEPARATE safe!!!
a gun can not harm anything! its only the people handling them that can!

DH is a hunter so we have rifles. unarmed, in a closet. or locked up in it's case in the attic.
i don't even think he has ammo for them right now... he will come turkey season though.

No, we have no reason for them. It scares me when people buy a handgun, shoot at a range, and say they are "trained". To me, only someone in law enforcement is trained. Growing up I always heard the story about the son who was spending the night out and decided to come home without telling the parents. He entered the living room in the middle of the night, and the father shot him, thinking it was an intruder. Not sure if this is an urban legend, but it could happen. Also, when we have children I can't seem letting them play at someone's house that has guns that are not completely locked away.

Yes.. my DH's job entails him to have one. I hate it there but what can ya do.

me and vin - no.
but when i lived with my parents and kenneth lived with us, yes, b/c he is a policeman.
then, he lived with my sister until he was hurt and had his guns there.
i think he has 1 or 2 off-duty guns, a special engraved gun that he won (best shooter in his academy class), and then his regular duty gun. they are all in a fire-proof, bomb-proof, safe that needs both his fingerprint and his combo. NONE of us knew it when he was hurt - that is how secret he kept it. i guess with christopher he had to make it very secure. his guns were NEVER out when he wasn't at work. unless they were on his body they were in that safe.
he also taught christopher and drilled it into his head that if he EVER sees a gun - RUN and get an adult. NEVER touch the gun, etc. they have a kids book about this -- it is from an officer's perspective and teaches the kids.
