Update with great news...Can anyone answer some questions about mold in my home?

If you have dealt with mold, can you answer a few ? for me? How do you know if the mold you have growing is dangerous or not or if you need a professional to rectify?

If you disturb it by scraping, sanding, does that pose more danger than leaving it alone (it's under paint on a wall in our child's bedroom, on the chimney wall). We know it's b/c we need a new chimney lining (we had the chimney repaired years ago with a cap and caulking but need more work on it).

So can anyone answer my above ?. Thanks

Update - It's NOT mold after all!!! All levels in DDs room turned out great, from wall sample to air quality. What a thorough job the inspector did, and I learned so much.

I would have a mold remediation co. come in. We paid about $350 I think. They will do a full report on the type of mold and issues with those types. It happened to us when I was PG and I was told that the placenta protected my babies, but your baby will not be protected. I might even get her out of her room until this was rectified. You will also have to repair the original issue. I would not scrape it. You can look into a product called Shockwave. Its made by Fiberlock(fiberlock.com)

if you disturb it then yes it is more of a problem cause the mold spores are in the air and you breathe them in.

Some will say if it is contained (under paint) then it is fine. IMO if it was in my childs room I would have it removed completely.

Black mold is the bad one but really none are good for you.

I agree about the mold remiedation co. We bought a house that had mold found, they had a co. come in and take care of all of it. You don't want to scrape it etc. b/c it may become airborne and then its worse.

We had bad black mold.

You need to get someone that REALLY specialize in it.

A lot of company claim to be expert but they are just "cleaning" businesses and uses products that anyone can use at Home Improvement stores.

To use a company that really knew what they were doing was $5K. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We used

DO NOT SCRAPE IT!!! If it is back, then yes, it is the bad mold! If you DC is being affected by it, she/he will have respiratory/cold like symptoms. Typically you can kill mold with a bleach and water mixture, and then repaint with a mold resistant paint, although due to it's location, and the previous leak, you will probably want to remove the sheetrock and replace it. It is far deeper than just surficial, so the bleach will not do the trick. Can call a mold company or even just a GC to remove the sheetrock, and replace. Make sure that they get to the root of it when removing everything under the sheetrock.

To answer your FM, this is the company we used as well. They came and inspected our house for mold, took swab samples and indoor air quality samples. It was around $400 for everything, including a report with the findings. Good luck!

I called them and they told me they just do removal, not inspections? Chat Icon
