We just went through this and none of the big companies would insure us (and our house is MILES from the water). State Farm, Liberty Mutual, Geico, Allstate... the phone calls got us nowhere. They all told us they wouldn't do policies on LI anymore. State Farm gave us a quote in December and when we went to buy it mid-January, they told us we were out of luck. Sometime between December and mid-January they had "filled their quota" for Long Island and told me to try again in about six months.
It got so frustrating, we started calling brokers instead and got our insurance that way. I couldn't take any more rejection phone calls!
Long story short (too late!) we have Hartford.
