OMG Shanti...
this is such a heartbreaking article but a VERY important message.
i am glad you posted it, though I am so sad reading it. I strongly agree about why never to give a pet away FOR FREE.

Re: PSA: Please do not give animals away for free
Excellent point.
A rescuer friend told me that she frequently talks to people who sound like wonderful adopters but once they find out there will be a home visit/interview, they are never heard from again.
It happens much more than you think.

Re: PSA: Please do not give animals away for free
It's so sick
When we took in a stray cat who had kittens over a year ago, it seemed the logical thing was to put up flyers or an ad on Craigslist that we'd give the kittens away for free to a good home.
That was before I heard a local news story that a guy and his father had been convicted of answering "free kitten" ads, and then feedings the kittens to his python
There are a lot of disgusting people in the world.

aww that so terrible. I never even thought of it. It makes me soo sad to think of how many animals are out there living in those types of situations.

Re: PSA: Please do not give animals away for free
There are also well meaning people out there who are hoarders and take in free animals. It's important to take at least a small fee. It's sad but if you're re-homing, you have to do your research and cannot assume people automatically want what is best for your pet.
