Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
Im actually not a fan....
And it doesnt taste like strawberries...
There is some cocoa in it so I kind of feel like it's "trying" to be chocolate yet it isnt...and I cant get past that.
It's a "nice" cake..but nothing spectacular.

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
It's kinda chocolate. It's light & fluffy. Traditionally it has cream cheese frosting. Im not a big cake person in general.
I had a red velvet cheesecake @ Jr's NYC. Amazing.

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
Someone brought a Red Velvet cake into work one day about 3 or 4 years ago. I LOVED it. Thought it was the greatest cake I ever tasted. I tried to make cupcakes once and hated them. Now if ever I get a cupcake from the bakery it just don't taste the same as when I first had it!

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
It's basically a chocolate cake that's not as concentrated with chocolate.
It's light and yummy!

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
Cream cheese icing is what really makes this, IMO.
I would buy the cupcakes at this Italian place downtown NYC and they were amazing!

It the texture....smooth and light. Like Velevt!! And add that cream cheese/coconut combo.....heavenly!!
It's great if you like chocolate but aren't a chocoholic too.

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
it's the cream cheese icing - the cake itself isn't quite chocolate .........it's like it's TRYING to be chocolate, but you ran out -

I am not a fan. So there is no appeal. I actually tried it again this weekend and was sorely disappointed!

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
It's a dense chocolate cake with cream cheese ice cream which is my fav! It being red serves no purpose though lol

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
Actually, the history behind red velvet cake is that it was trying to be chocolate.
During world war 2 or maybe world war 1 - they rationed chocolate and therefore people would make this cake as a substitute to satisfy the cravings of the men (and ladies) back home.
I prefer chocolate myself but have to admit I do love the cream cheese frosting!!

Re: red velvet cake - what's the appeal?
I don't get the appeal....
It looks so pretty (red is my favorite color)
But it tastes blah to me -- I am not a huge cake person though--my favorite cake is a Duncan Hines box cake like Funfetti
