If you have been to Hawaii....
would you recommend doing a Luau, or not to bother with it? Everyone I ask says dont do it, that its just a touristy thing, but thought I'd get some more opinions.

If you are going to do it, I would do the fire performer one. We thought that was impressive. Yes, it is touristy, buy you know what, you are in Hawaii and that is what they do there.

i would def do it again if i went back to hawaii..in fact i attended 2 luaus while we were there...i think they are fun, part of the culture there and that's what you do when you are in hawaii!!!LOL! what islands are you going to? i have to say, i really enjoyed them and the 2 i went to were different..one was on a smaller scale and the other much larger audience..

I've been there a few times and I really cant imagine why people are saying not to do it. Its actually alot of fun! Yes you will be amongst tourist but the whole island is very touristy. Thats where their profits basically come from. I would not miss it. Especially if you can find one that is more "Island-ish" on the beach etc..... I know the marriott does one but its not as authentic.

We're doing Maui and Kauai. Just going through the tour books now and trying to make a list of things that we absolutely must do!

I've been to Hawaii twice, once with my parents and we did a luau, and then once on my honeymoon where we did it again (bc DH had never been).
It is touristy, but it is a nice night out on the water, and it is fun. On our honeymoon one, they called all the newleywed couples up, and we had to go to the beach (which was where the show was basically). They played a song for all of us for our first dance as married couples on the beach. It was really sweet and romantic!

we went to one on Kauai and it was fun! definitely touristy- but i think its something you "have" to do if you go to hawaii  it was just a nice night out, decent food and good entertainment- the fire dancer was neat to see!

I think it is once in a lifetime type thing - you really only need to do it once - Yes they are touristy - but some are actually fun/good. I would do one if you can fit it into your schedule - why not if you go out there. I did one on my 1st trip to hawaii but not on the other trips.
It has been a very long time since I have been there so I don't have a rec - but if you are there for a while it might be fun to go to one.

We went to the one at the cultural center. The dinner was absolutely disgusting! It was big $$ and terrible. The show after was great so I would recommend skipping the dinner and just seeing the show

We did the luau at the polynesian cultural center even though everyone who ever went to hawaii told us it would be an awful meal.
When we were there, I was not impressed at all but now that I look back, the pictures from the center and luau are pretty nice.
You should check it out.

Same here... our TA booked it for us. The food is really good too and we had so much fun!
