UGH - is my dh kidding me????
I just wanted to post this story and get your opinions. Last month my BIL and SIL came to my home for my DS christening. They brought "pigpen" with them as well as "buddy"
pigpen is a pitbull and they honestly scare me, please no flames, it is just a personal fear of mine.
So pigpen is outside and my dd (almost 3 years old) wants to go out there with my DH and BIL. My SIL says "NO, do not let her out there, pigpen is NOT good with children - not sure WHY they would bring him then but that is another story)....so I tell my DH "do NOT let miki out there, SIL said it is not a good idea"
DH then said "it is fine, you are making it worse by getting anxious, etc"
I said "there is no ******* way she will be around this dog if the OWNER is telling me that it is not a good idea"
ugh, he ****** me off - why would you even risk your dd getting hurt????????????
thanks for letting me vent

Re: UGH - is my dh kidding me????
All I needed to hear is the owner giving a warning about being around children! Even if that only means that Pigpen just doesn't know his size and knocks them down, that's enough for me.
Really, this is a big thing with me. Even completely friendly dogs can get anxious when a child runs right to them, hugs them, jumps around or squeals with glee.
They are usually so eager to please us that we can completely disregard the distance between dog psychology and human psychology - and that "nice" human things are signs of dominance or aggression to them!
You did the right thing. But it sounds like a longer, calmer conversation might be in order!

!
exactly, that is what I said, after I called him an idiot under my breath
it's not like my SIL was saying "yeah, pigpen is fine, he is gentle" and I still said to keep miki away from him
I said to my DH "I think she knows her dog better than us, if she says he is not good with kids, that is all I need to hear"

I would be so ticked off at DH, but he was probably all excited about the dog and wanted your daughter to be able to play with him so he wasn't thinking so clearly. You definitely did the right thing here, and really I always assume a dog is NOT good with kids until I get reassurance from the owner that they are friendly and calm enough - why take that risk?

Re: UGH - is my dh kidding me????
I'm really still weirded out that they would bring a dog who's not good with children to a home with a toddler and a NEWBORN, that is just WEIRD and annoying and I'd be super stressed out about that! Greenie's answer was dead on, maybe you can show that to him (sans your original post of course! ) -- it sounds like he's underestimating the danger here. It's the potential for misinterpretation that is the real problem; add in the size and the sheer strength pits have, and that could be a tragedy waiting to happen. He probably didn't want to offend your guests and downplayed it, but that doesn't make you wrong for reiterating that the dog is not good with kids and Miki should NOT be out there with him!!

I was stressed and annoyed but at that point, i could not just tell them to bring him back home (12 hours away in NY )
luckily I was there to make sure the dog stayed outside or in the hotel room, as sucky as that was for the dog

the hotel room
What's a hotel room and why don't I have one?
Even if the owners say a dog is friendly, I still don't trust them around children. Especially the first time. They're just too unpredictable, you know? My dog may be gentle as can be but he's never had his tail pulled or been stepped on or had a child's finger in his eye. I have no idea how he would react! I *think* I know, but no one can really be sure.

I'm love my dog more than anything and she's pretty well behaved - but I would NEVER bring her to someone's party, especially an infant's Christening

Ya I still get hung up on whey they brought the dog! Did they ask your permission in advance? I have a 4 lb Pom and always ask if I can bring her...and why would they even want to if it's not good with kids. Dogs can turn in an instant...so it's scary. I always have to remind myself of that since I am such a dog person and feel like I'll have to remember that when I have kids

Re: UGH - is my dh kidding me????
Thats weird that brought the dogs.
Anywho, I do agree with greenfreak. We have a boxer at my uncles who is the friendliest mush ever but she as too hyper around kids. She would want to jump on them not realizing her size. now she is too old to do anything but if the owner gives a warning its for a very good reason.
It was like one of my cats i had. he was so tempermental and i would tell everyone dont pet him, he will bite you. No one listened to me and was like he is so cute blah blah then seconds later: OUCH, your cat scratched/bit me. My response: I told you dummy to leave him alone
